Many altheletes have worked with psychiatrists and performance coaches to learn to deal with both the external and internal pressure. Nancy Kerrigan didn't have clean programs until her Olympic year. I recall reading an article where she siad that she didn't want to practice her long program because she would always picture herself falling. As a result, not enough practice and nerves, lead to 'letting' herself fall. And it became worse when she went inot 1993 as THE favorite. So, she refocused her schedule and learned to think positive and trained correctly - result = 2 clean medal winning performances at the 94 Olympics.
