I saw this movie on television last night for the first time. Unfortunately, I missed a critical few minutes--and I don't know why he got fired from his job. Can anyone fill me in?:\

Gosh it's been a long time since I've seen this, but if I remember correctly.....Jerry has a kind of epiphany, writes a memo to the effect that sports agents should be more concerned with their clients and less about the bottom line, reads it to his office who decides that he has gone a little nuts, lost his edge....now I want to watch the movie again!

Thanks! I saw the memo part and the part where they all applauded him. I just didn't understand how suddenly he got fired. It wasn't as though he lost his clients, at least not before he got fired. That was the few minutes I was out of the room, at any rate.

Piel's right, Rgal. Plus what Jerry specifically mentions in his "Mission Statement" ("It's not a memo," lol) is "fewer dollars." THAT, imo, is the coup de grace that gets him canned. A sports agent that tells the entire agency that they shoudl try to make LESS money? How long is that guy going to be around?

I love this movie. I love that they have Jann Wenner, founder and editor of "Rolling Stone" as the head of the sports agency. I love Tom Cruise in an all too rare comedic role. I love John Travolta's wife (I forget her name) as Avery, Jerry Maguire's girlfriend (ya gotta see the unedited version; what they cut out for TV with Avery and Jerry is one of the most hilarious sex scenes I've ever seen). I love Renee Zellweger, the kid who plays her kid, the "child managment specialist" ie the nanny, who is also great in a movie called "High Fidelity"; I love Cuba Gooding, Jr.'s character and his character's whole family, especially the wife, "I'm pregnant and I'm incapable of BS." And Cameron Crowe's writing and direction hasn't been this good since "Say Anything."

Definitely worth renting the DVD, I think.
