Vaughn Chipeur finally reached the podium in his fifth try at Canadian Nationals in senior men when he earned the silver medal in 2009. Chipeur had been steadily improving since a 16th place in 2006, finishing just off the podium in fourth last season. [More]

I admire his jumps. Huge 3A and quad-like 3Lz!! Seriously, I thought he did 4Lz at 4CC for a moment.
"I've tried the toe, the Lutz and the Salchow and they're all quite close," Chipeur shared. -Yeah, I can totally see that! Kudos!!

I really, really liked Vaughan's SP, as skated at Canadians. And his 3A is totally :love:

Here's his Canadian Nationals LP, but he skated his program nearly flawlessly at 4CC's. If you can view Ice Network, or the CBC website, you should definitely watch that version of the program. If you can't get either, watch the Canadians version below.

Doris - I am a big fan of Chipeur's style. BTW, do you know that Vaughan's last name has been phoneticized into English/French from the Polish. I think the Ch in Polish is Sz. Can you figure out the last name?

Well, I once had a German teacher whose last name was Wojtkiewiscz, pronounced Voit Kev vich, if that helps. Alas, my husband's father, who was the only Polish member of the family, passed away in 1985, so I have no one to ask.

That is an interesting question, though. Here is what Vaughn says about it.

"My heritage is Polish," he says, "But I only know that connects to my last name, Chipeur. Which back in Poland was spelt Szczypior. I'm glad they changed it!"

The name is also listed in the genealogical records of Polish immigrants to Ontario who spoke the Kashubian dialect. (Scroll down to the S's.)

223) SZCZYPI”R CHIPPIOR, CHIPPURE CHIPEUR, STIPIO SZCZYPIOR, SCIPIOR

Another difficult name. Two of the very first pioneers on the Opeongo Line were Szczypiors. In Poland, it seems to come from north of Lipusz, around Sierakowice. There are lots of Chippiors in the Barry's Bay, Wilno area. Some left there and moved to Saskatchewan where they are known as Chipeurs. There are 7 Scipiors in the Sevens Point phone book.

"Chipeur" is a Frenchified version of the name. Vaughn is from Saskatchewan.

By the way, the name "Lipinski" is also on this list. :)

Math, Thanks for the info. I wonder if Jr. pairs bronze medallist SImon Shnapir's name (from the Russian) is similar/related?. The Polish/Russian border has wandered about a good deal over time.

I think this is a Russian Jewish name usually rendered "Snapir."

Off topic, but the name I am most curious about is "Czisny." Alissa says only that it is shortened from a "Prussian" original (OK, that narrows it down to about a dozen east-central European languages. ) She also says that her ancestry comes from many different countries all over Europe.
