I agree. It is a beautiful piece of music that Caroline could do a great job with, but at the moment The Lark Ascending still feels like it belongs to Yu-Na. It would be different if it was a more widely used piece, but as far as I know, Yu-Na's the only one who's done it and 3 years doesn't seem like that much time especially with the fantastic job Yu-Na did with it.

Angela N did it, but that's it. But I have to agree that at this point Caroline may not want the comparisions made. However "if" Yu-na retires than she could use it.

If Zhang could get more speed, something like Canon in D for a short might be good for her. Although I'm hoping that Kostner will go back to that.

I think Zhang just needs to find music that she connects to. But hopefully something with some highs and lows.

If she wants something from a ballet:

    Raymonda
    La Slyphide (?)
    Themes and Variations by Tchaikovsky

    Yeah, that's my worry, too...

But, Yu-na did skate it clean at GPF! Well, "clean" by the old COP standards. I think one of her lutz and flip (or were they two lutzes?) were both under-rotated, and I couldn't really tell the flip/lutz apart. But, let's not get sidetracked by this discussion... In the old days, it wasn't huge deal, and the crowd sure didn't care. And the performance was sublime indeed.

Oh, I do like it. The climax at 5:40 is perfect for spirals, indeed. It would take some talented editing to put it all together, though. It's funny, I started chatting with a girl on the bus last night after the concert, and she told me she was a violinist studying at the SF Conservatory. I asked her what her favorite composers were, she told me for playing the violin, she really loves Barber's violin concerto and Tchaikovsky's violin concert. So there, I had two high recommendations for the same two pieces in the same day. LeCygne, you weren't the girl I met on the bus last night were you? That would be too funny!

And I like Tchaikovsky's violin concerto as well. I like the violin melodic theme that starts at 1:10 in this video, doesn't last long, though. And again, a pretty snippet at 3:15. And the orchestral recap starting at 9:00 is wonderful for the final set of spins.

Andalusia, you didn't go to the Vaughen Williams concert in SF, did you?

But someone mentioned Firebird, and I found this version:

I am not sure that Caroline can carry off the very powerful finale, but it is breathtaking music indeed.

I like the Gadfly suite (Romance) very much. I like the contrast between the gentle solo beginning, and the more dramatic orchestra parts, and it closes on a gentle violin note.

The David Foster pieces are both very pretty, but maybe a little too gentle. I like the Last Mohigan, though maybe not that version, it's a little repetitive, reminds me of Mao's LP this year (though not as bad).

I liked Caroline's Les Miserables exhibition this year very much. I found it in instrumental format:

not as nice as the original, though...

Anastasia might be good for Caroline, too. In Tara's selection, the first half is lyrical (which Caroline can do better than Tara, I think), and the second half is bubbly (Tara does it well, but I think Caroline should avoid this section):
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvQbNCgtT84
Rainbow also has lyrical and dramatic parts:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QZhIs6OIJ-I
Again, I think if Caroline wants to use it, she has to choose a different selection. She's not energetic and bubbly like Tara at all.
Tara was an immensely talented skater, at such a precocious age; that is undeniable even (especially?) looking back after all these years.
I think Caroline and Tara share their determination and competitive spirit (and mental toughness), but not their skating styles or on-ice personalities.

I like all this music! Thanks for all your wonderful suggestions.

What a coincidence. I am a violinist as well, but I live on the other side of the country. My favorite violin concerto is Mendelssohn, but that's a bit overused in skating. Anyway, I listened to Tchaikovsky again and I think I like Barber better. Barber's melodies are more.. hauntingly beautiful (is that the right word?) while Tchaikovsky is more generic pretty tunes. Both pieces would require a lot of editing, but Tchaikovsky is freaking 20 minutes long!! Haha well I guess Caroline can decide which she likes.

    Songs don't belong to anyone.
There can be some versions considered to be the best of all the versions of one song, but it shouldn't mean that song belongs to the best only.
Lark Ascending would be perfect for Caroline. DO IT ZHANG!

Takahashi used this two seasons ago. I've never heard the concerto until he first skated to it and I loved it. He skated really well to it and had a great cut of the music.

I think it would suit Caroline only if she manages to build up more speed as the music is pretty powerful and it may make her appear even slower and more laboured if the speed is not there.

I just listened Secret Garden, Jennifer Robinson's selection. It's marvelous! I think Caroline can do really well with that one, too.

Has anyone else noticed how many people are proposing a waltz for Caroline? I agree that it suits her!

I forwarded Caroline everyone's suggestions. It was a very long list!

Let's see if Caroline picks any of our suggestions. Wouldn't it be awesome if she does?

It's almost like the lottery. But, maybe she's already picked her music by now, though she can save the list for next season. I don't think she'll retire any time soon! (I hope not, anyway.)

I'm late to the party, but flamenco Kimmie skated to couple years ago would suit Caroline perfectly. The tempo is not too fast, but it would bring out the flair Caroline showed in Spanish Gypsy.

I really like the idea of Galacia Flamenca for Caroline. Her Spanish Gypsy program was not only the best for her IMO but also was very successful with it internationally.
Whatever Caroline chooses, she could do well with as long as she performs as she did later this season. If she starts skating slowly again with a frozen face no music choice is going to help her.
The Secret Garden Theme is very good too. I girl from my rink who skates a lot like Caroline does used that music.
