I loved the latest story from the New Yorker - http://www.newyorker.com/fiction/features/2009/05/04/090504fi_fiction_hareven. While I usually enjoy N.Y's fiction, most of it reminds me of Rushdie's phrase in an introduction to "American Best Short Stories 2008" - "well written but lacking that sense that they demanded to be written". Well, the "Slows" certainly demanded to be written. The issues it raises are nothing new - what it means to be human, what we want for our children, and the role of progress in all that. For whatever reason, though, this one touched some deep cords in my heart, may be because some it hits so close to home. Wonder if anyone else had any reaction to it (the link is to the complete text of the story).
