Meno and Sand were absolutely beautiful together. Will be interesting to see what they can do to make that critical difference. (I think John just needs to land his solo jump in the short frankly.)

Personally I found Meno and Sand one of the most boring pair teams of their time. Inoue and Baldwin also struggle to keep my attention so I hope that their coaches are not going to try to inject any of their "style" into them because for it would be the kiss the death and I wouldn't expect them to make the Olympic team.

It's a change that makes sense for I&B for two reasons.

The most important one is that they have been unable to get the levels on non-lift skills the last 2 years. Todd is a technical specialist for both men and pairs.

    (page 22)

Mills was their choreographer (and for all I know, may still be). They just called him their coach. Note that his website is:

To make the Olympic team, I&B will need all the stray technical points they can get.

The other reason is that Meno & Sand operate out of CA.

Third reason M&S had a good throw double axel. And a better twist than I&B have. I&B may want help getting their 3ATh back, and their twist can use all the help it can get.

With no real standouts in US pairs, I quietly root for Baldwin because of his age. It empowers me as an "old timer" too!

I hope they do well. That pair has never won a competition off of American soil.

Ant, I was at the 1995 Nationals, Meno & Sand's long program brought the house down. I do agree that their elements remained stagnant throughout their competitive career.

Also, if I recall correctly John was competing in singles at the 1995 Nationals. 14 years is a long time in figure skating. Wow.

John has been at Nationals for over 20 years. He won novice singles at US Nationals in 1987.

Is that unusual when thinking about Kwan, Cohen, Plushenko, Bunton, and others?

Anyway, since the US has 2 places to send to the Olys, I believe they were a given until Denney/Barrett showed up suddenly.

But I wonder what their goal is.

    To make the Olympic team?
    Top 5?
    Podium?
    Gold?

I think they want to make the olympic team. They cant be thinking of breaking the international podium, they were as close they as they were going to get in 2006 with the throw triple axel. I think just making the team after missing out this year is what they want.

I love them, though their programs through the years have become incredibly similar. But the times that their personalities as individuals got to come out the programs sang...

my dad LOVES to watch them though (he ranks them - in terms of favorites, not best skaters - with G&G and Jamie and David = all of whom have made him cry when he watches them skate... the big goob! )

Meno and Sand were lovely together, but I agree with a previous post that their programs stagnated. Didn't they do Nessun Dorma like 3 years in a row? I recall the audience at Nationals audibly groaned when the music came on. Not that they weren't beautiful to watch, but enough seemed enough.
