Withdrawls happen all the time. Are the athletes invited to compete at these competitions? I thought they registered if they wanted to compete. Whoever registers is put on the entry list, but that doesn't guarantee that they will actually show up. Always better to register beforehand so you have the spot, but due to any number of circumstances (we really don't know the condition of Caroline's knee at this point) a withdrawl is very likely to happen.
Do I hope Caroline will compete? Yes. Do I think that she, Mirai, and Rachael will all show up at this competition? Not really. I think Mirai probably will do it, but Caroline and Rachael are up in the air, Caroline because of the injury and Rachael's been pretty busy traveling/she already did a summer competition.
I think skaters are invited to charity shows, but you are probably right about a competition. If Caroline, Rachael and Mirai are all on the entry list, then they must have indicated they want to skate. Caroline did Golden West last year and crushed her competition. We'll see what happens this year.
Local competitions (like Golden West) - you fill out your entry form, pay the fee and you are listed as a competitor. If you are going to withdraw, they typically request you do it as early as possible to allow for schedule adjustments.
I originally posted the following in the Golden West thread in the Events forum -- link to the event thread is: http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?t=28665
ETA: If a skater being monitored cannot compete due to injury, they would inform USFS and make alternative arrangements.Team B envelope skaters Nagasu, Zhang, and Inoue/Baldwin are expected to compete here for "competition readiness" monitoring in preparation for their Grand Prix events.

I saw her training last week, jumping and doing choreo in good spirit. Knee looks ok.
has the mule kick gone?
n hw abt her speed?
Hopefully, there will be some videos up on YouTube of the performances at Golden West. That will tell us a great deal. It looks like there will be an unusually high number of well known skaters for a local club event.
Caroline lose her mule-kick? That would be like losing her pearl spin.![]()
Let the betting begin for what color her long program dress will be-- as it is the Nutcracker, I will be shocked if its anything other than white, pink, or baby blue.
Three colors I'm not exactly excited to see her in (again). No more pastels please!
How would this look on the princess of figure skating?![]()
