New coach for Kostner?

I wasn't sure about Mishin because he's openly said he doesn't like training ladies. Plus, he seems pretty concentrated on Plushchenko right now. Maybe Grutter (she wouldn't need to move far). Hill is a long shot. Maybe Raphael Arutunian? Or maybe Kurt Browning? Or does he just do choreo?

Mishin complained about Russian female skaters not being competitive enough before.
But I think now he might have a different idea on that since he's training very talented young Russian girls for 2014 Olympics.

Whoever she goes to, I hope it's not Orser. He doesn't strike me as a very ethical person. Instead on working on his skater's weaknesses he prefers to complain about the unfairness of the judges and the judging system, and while we are at it, whine about the other skaters' marks being too high.

I suppose he's a good person to have on your side, though. As proved by Mishin, such "my skater is perfect" campaign works wonders. And it's the success that matters, isn't it?

Personally I would love dor Carolina to try working with Lee Barkell. He doesn't have any elite skaters right now. He's a good jump coach, and his skaters praised him for the support he has offered them.

I think it's sort of risky to change coach in the Olympic season, though. From what I've read in the interviews with the coaches and skaters who have changed coaches, the process of accustoming to new training regime and working on the skaters' technique and style can take a long time.

Good luck to Caro, though!

Are you talking about Arutunian?

Brian Orser "unethical?" I have never heard that before. Most skating fans can see what a wonderful job he has done guiding Yuna. I think the expectations for Rippon have increased since he has switched to Orser. And his name seems to come up alot whenever there is a coaching change these days.

I know why you don't like Orser. But I think you could disagree with his opinions but don't have any right to call it unethical.

Don't forget Orser has been respected in the FS community for about 30 years. ;)

what did he do?

As far as I remember he even filed a complaint or at least was very vocal about Yu-Na receiving an edge call on her flip and downgrade on her lutz.
There was also a clip showing him commenting on Miki's jumps and comparing them to Yu-Na's.
Not sure if this was the same competition but I also remember him saying Miki's 3-3 should have been downgraded.

Personally, I don't like this. I don't remember any other coach making such a fuss about a tech.specialist's call. And there've been lots of questionable ones!
Using Miki like this also didn't seem very ethical to me.

I respect your opinions - but disagree that no other coaches (not to mention high ranking Federation officials) have ever made complaints about judging.
At the 2002 Olympics there were plenty of complaints about the Pairs, Dance and Ladies competition. There are many other examples that could be cited.
1980, 1994, 1998 all come to mind.

Who were the technical specialists at these events, again?

But seriously, although I don't think much about complaining about edge calls and commenting on other athletes, this incident is not enough to call him an unethical person. He is fussy, no doubt about it but this is the heat of competition and happens often enough.

Thanks for reminding me - of the good old days - before cop and anonymous scoring from the judges. :)

I guess that despite Orser's "outburst" at COC he still managed to get enshrined in the Figure Skating Hall of Fame last Spring. Sombody in the skating world must respect his career achievements and believe in his integrity.

Tech Specialists in the good ol' days were the judges themselves... just because it's been taken out of their hands it still is valid to have a coach or other person debate the call.

Orser was calling for fairness, plain and simple. Score it right, that's what is supposed to happen...

Orser was inducted to the Hall of Fame this spring due to his achievements as a competitor. His coaching career was not part of the equation.

Coaches' complaints about technical panel decisions are commonplace. Just sticking with a few examples from last season, the Italian Federation tried to file a grievance at Europeans when Kostner's final spin was disallowed. Morozov was unhappy when Ando's triple-triple was called under rotated at Skate America. Zoueva has had plenty to say at several events; actually, for my money, various ice dance coaches complain the most, certainly more than Orser.

He said he cannot take any more elite skater in his team.

Good decision for Orser's team.I was really shocked when Takahashi left Morosov last season. I feel happy for not occuring the same thing to Yuna.I know she will not leave Orser, but something will affect the relationship between Yuna and Orser in case he takes Kostner.

Carolina will train with Frank Carroll this summer, not sure what's her plan after that. Wonder how Evan and Mirai will respond to this.

If Oser decided to take no more elite skaters and just focus on Yuna, I'm expecting the same from Frank.

I'm also curious about the impact of Caro's coach change on Tomas, they seem to share the same kind of mental issue and inconsistency in competitions. Should we blame the skaters or the coach for that?
