Figure Skating - The Way It Used To Be

I was looking at some old footage of figure skating and found some great footage from 1960 on YouTube.

Here is Carol Heiss in 1958. Wow talk about stress, the judges are sitting right on the ice while she skates and it is an all male judging pannel!!

Here is some other great footage from the Squaw Valley Olympics in 1960:

This is the way I remember figure skating. Oh for the "good old days..."

You know, I wonder whether any skaters ever had a spectacular fall and knocked over one the judges, chair and all?

I don't see how it could have been avoided.

Midori had a pretty good crash once (or was it twice ) - I think she jumped out of the rink!

That was indeed a bad warm up collision!
I was referring to the time Midori jumped out of the rink during a performance.

I remembered when Midori crashed into the camera, but then came right back onto the ice, later apologizing to the cameramen. What I didn't realize was that the collision took place during the warm up for the same competition.

I knocked over a judge on a figures test long ago. They weren't in a chair, but I missed a turn, and down I went

Speaking of the 1960 Olympics. . . Robert Paul, who won the gold medal in pairs with partner Barbara Wagner, told me he doesn't know how they managed to get through their program on that outdoor rink. One half of the rink was in direct sunlight and melted to slush while the other half was in the shade and frozen hard as rock! Can't imagine how they did figures in wind, either!

Just imagine if the boards had not been there in 2008 when Mao completely missed the take off of her triple axel. She might have taken down a few of them.

Am I the only one who is going to remark on the jumping and spinning in different directions by Ms. Heiss? Did everyone else know about this already? I've just never been able to be bothered to watch any skating footage pre-Peggy Fleming.

Oh yes seniorita. It was much colder watching it outside

Here is Peggy Fleming in 1967 skating in the last WC to be held outdoors.
It is hard to tell from the clip, but it is a piece of skating history.

Yes, I remember that spectacular moment; however, good thing for Midori (and the judges) there were no judges sitting right on the ice in her path.

Here is a clip with highlights of Olympic champion Peggy Fleming's LP and also her last performance before turning Pro. Wanna see a gravity defying spread eagle?
