due to chronic knee pain.

http://web.icenetwork.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20091008&content_id=7399410&vkey=ice_pressrelease

"My knee had become chronically inflamed, swollen and painful," Meissner said. "After some testing, along with an MRI, I was diagnosed with severe patellar tendonitis and a partial dislocation to my right kneecap."

Though she has undergone physical therapy the last six weeks, Meissner does not believe she is ready for competition.

"I started adding triple jumps about two weeks ago, and my Salchow, loop, toe and Axel are pain free," Meissner said, "However, my flip and Lutz still cause pain in the center of my knee."

After consulting with an orthopedic specialist, Meissner made the decision that, in order to prevent chronic or further damage to her knee, she will withdraw from her upcoming Grand Prix assignments.

"For the United States to be represented properly, especially during an Olympic year, I feel I must put my personal desire to compete aside," Meissner said.

I had no idea Kimmie was dealing with a serious injury. My interpretation of her press release is that she is out for the season. I hope I am wrong and that she will recover and be able to compete at Nationals. This doesn't look good.

Thanks for the link.

Meissner Pulls out of GP Series

My guess is that she's down for the season or maybe forever. I think that can be a chronic problem. I hope it's not the case for her but it doesn't look good.

What a bummer! May Kimmie heal completely from this. Is there any chance for her to compete in Nationals this season?

Hey everyone! Sorry it's been so long. As you may know I had to withdraw from my GP assignments. It was a VERY hard decision. Thank you all for sticking by me through all of this. I'm sorry to let you down, but I want to reassure you that I'm not retiring or anything crazy. Just taking off for the season. Thanks again for your support. I truly appreciate it. Oh and thank you all for the birthday wishes! So long teenage years...helloooo 20's

Is there any chance for her to compete in Nationals this season?
 Not under current USFS rules, unfortunately, because she now would need to qualify for Nationals through Regionals and Sectionals, and her Regionals (South Atlantics) starts tomorrow and goes through Tuesday.

This is pretty depressing news...
This decision must really be for the better for her though, right now.

:scowl: C'mon, Kimmie, you are a fighter!!

Very sad news for such a sweet and talented young woman. If she truly will be forced to hang up her skates for good, she will be missed.

So we won't be seeing Kimmie at Nationals, bummer. I am glad to hear that she is not hanging up her skates, just out for the season. Wishing her a speedy recovery.

Has Kwan retired officially? And we all know how skaters say they dont retire blablabla... she's 20, her career, this was the olympics, her time to redeem herself... she's done.

For Kwan, I agree, but for Meissner, she's got some time left (assuming she heals in a few months). She can continue to skate in her early 20s, perhaps. But MK is just about 30, and she's immersed in school.

Then again, you never know- she's not saying whether this is a career-ending injury or not. Season-ending, apparently, but she's not saying anything about it ending her career.

Here is a Baltimore Sun article. USFS confirms in it that her bye to Nats has been voided.

So she is done for the season. Apparently she is not retiring though so her fans can still hope for 2014.

She's smart not to risk deeper and long lasting if not permanent injury. Hopefully with the proper rest and treatment she will be back. In the meantime, she can get on with her schooling if she so desires.

Somehow I never fully saw her coming back. Poor girl. Every since she made a move specifically for her skating she has had nothing but injury and setback. I don't see her continuing skating if the pain is chronic and the fact that she will miss out on the olympic chance. Well she had a great moment of glory...she is lucky that the judges were fair that year at worlds unlike they often are to young skaters.

What a pity! I don't see her coming back from an injury with this kind of timing, though one never knows. I will always remember her sunny nature and those lovely triple triples at a time when no other American ladies were able to step up to the plate for us.

I'm so glad she has that World championship! She'll always keep that place in skating history, just as Naomi Nari Nam will always have that National silver medal.

Why all the doom & gloom!?!

Kimmie Meissner stated herself on her twitter page that she's only out for the season. I, for one, believe her.

There are literally many many examples of skaters coming back from injury to compete, no matter the age, it's par for the course. Some examples:

1. Fumie Suguri's been known to have knee problems herself over the years & is still competing at age 28 (will be 29 in December)!

2. Shizuka Arakawa won the 2006 Olympics at age 25, not to mention she had struggled with a foot injury two years prior.

3. Sasha Cohen had to sit out a season when she was younger due to a back/spinal injury, and she's still competing at age 25.

4. Michelle Kwan missed the entire 1997 GP due to a fracture to her foot (had to wear a cast), yet she came back to win the silver medal at both the 1998 Olympics & the bronze medal at the 2002 Olympics.

5. Irina Slutskaya struggled with injuries herself throughout her career, most notably her heart condition just prior to winning the bronze medal at the 2006 Olympics at age 27!

6. Maria Butyrskaya had a history of ups & downs throughout her loooong career, but yet managed to become the oldest lady to win the 1999 Worlds at age 26, as well as the oldest lady to win the 2002 Europeans at age 29!

And the list goes on & on & on... You get my point, lol. :D

Kimmie Meissner is a World Champion & a National Champion at only 20 yrs. old! And she has the distinction of being only the 2nd American female to have landed the 3Axel in competition. Heck, she's got plenty of time to come back. In fact, I think this will be good for her, time to sit out & recoup, heal her knee, and slowly come back stronger than ever before! Seriously. It's all up to her. She's got the goods, the mindset, everything she needs. I wouldn't be surprised to see her pull a Shizuka Arakawa at the 2014 Olympics in Sochi.
