I believe that the problems are basically two:
- The Olimpidas exaggerates the nationalistic feelings, and although you like a certain skater, you will always want that your country takes a medal. Also, the newspapers and the tv feed these feelings to have more public, and during the Olympic year there are many followers who are not fans of the skating.
-The two maximum candidates to the olympic gold are from countries that "hate" one to other. Although the relations between Korea and Japan have improved very much in the last years, it is a tense relation where there is great resentment.

Isn't there some sort of Code of Conduct that applies to the YouTube posts? Doesn't this sort of behavior violate some sort of general rule? I think this would be something to look at.

I hardly see how ignoring it is the answer. It is really terrible to see these girls (or any athletes for that matter) ridiculed and criticized with cruel, offensive, even racial comments by idiots around the world who do nothing with their lives. It's sad. I don't know what the answer is though. I wish youtube controlled its user comments more and did better to ban those members who abuse the privilege of watching such talent on youtube.

would you say the same of the posters who said horrible things about Bush (and now the other side on Obama?), how about the hateful things on certain football players? or are we just into protecting ladies in figure skating?

Quoting myself:
"It is really terrible to see these girls (or any athletes for that matter)..."

So no, I'm not just talking about figure skating. I was talking about all athletes. Politicians... well with them it's at least slightly different. Politicians by nature are supposed to be representing the people and making changes for the people. It is more justifiable for them to be criticized by the people because of their line of work. But that's not to say that verbal harassment on youtube is acceptable in any form.

But no, I refuse to believe that ignoring a problem is ever the best solution. Perhaps the maker of this thread should contact the higher-ups at youtube and try to have users banned who don't abide by the rules of conduct. But it's a hard thing to control, especially seeing as certain people and certain athletes in particular inspire unbelievable amounts of hatred. I know the Williams sisters do in women's tennis, and that is visible on youtube and other "chat" and video websites, and now it seems Kim in ladies' figure skating?! It's all a bit surreal to me. There are definitely athletes who I root against at times, but there's a limit to what should be said.

Well, there's this thing....it's called freedom of speech. It's a great thing, really, but the often frustrating thing about it is that in a medium of expression as open-ended as the Internet, malicious idiots too have the freedom to hold opinions without interference--no matter how stupid--and have the right to express them. Now, I think the "Yu-Na has plastic surgery" videos and their ilk are asinine and are a waste of bandwith, but I'd say that about many other things, including the "Skater X is a cheater who interfered with Skater Y in her warmup" videos. And videos of people farting. Or videos that say things like "Obama is a socialist Muslim who was born in Africa"

But just because I think they're stupid doesn't mean they should be removed from the Internet.

And again, if you post clips, don't allow comments. It's one of your options.

I had 2 videos that we took of Liberty a couple years ago of Rachael Flatt's programs. They were defaced with nasty comments about Rachael Flatt, and I had to reload the videos. I was very glad to see youtube offering a 'no comments' option.

All I can say is, throughout my 15 years of being a figure skating fan I've not really heard of any outright country-specific bashing. Either you are overreacting, or there must be something very special about Korea!

Yes, either there's something very special about Korea, or there's something very completely messed up with these fans who would upload these bashing videos against Yuna and Korea. :)

If you post youtube videos, one of your options to not allow any comments. That's what I will be doing in future. And when I turn to other posters videos, it is very easy to go full screen immediately, which blocks the comments.

Yes, I agree, and I think this is really all that needs to be said on this matter.:agree:

Yeah, that is why YuNa is so special like Bush and Obama. ;)

Why do I have the feeling that you confessed you are one of them?

I think Yuna's management should do something about it.
I believe in freedom of speech that i wouldn't mind videos critisizing weaknesses of my beloved skaters. However, Yuna's plastic surgery video is the case of diffusion of wrong information and defamation.

I tried to ignore those videos and even stopped searching for Yuna's new videos, because they annoyed me too much. However, these smart axxholes listed all the top search words of Koreans in their videos that I have to confront these videos whenever i look for my favorite K-pop musicians on youtube, argh~~~

What's more funny about Youtube system is that it has an option that allows video posters accept only comments that please them. For example, you see a video which is biased and you find all the comments are agreeing with the video. You kind of feel obliged to let other pple to know that there are also some pple who don't think like them. and then voilà, your comment is not posted b/c it's not authorized by the video posters. This way, the video poster can perfectly manipulate some naive visiters.

I wouldn't care if it is just one or two videos on the Internet, but seriously there are too many that i even think Yuna saw these videos. I had a friend who suffered a lot from the cyber defamation and it just hurts me a lot whenever I think of the pain she went through. I even hope Yuna's management will bring an action of libel so that it can leave a good lesson to anyone who are planning the similar attacks on the internet.

I hate when posters do that.

Anyway, I think it's not even about Yuna here. I think these posters just use Yuna as a vehicle, a scapegoat if you will, for getting out their bigger message, which is hate for the Korean people.

Unfortunately for Yu-Na, she's such an easy target for that hatred too, being that she is the biggest star of South Korea. Along with fame and success, comes a lot of hate . . . it's a sad fact of life for every major public figure. Yu-Na's tough though, and I'm sure her handlers do their best to advise and protect her from seeing such hateful multimedia messages.

If you do not stand up for your own beliefs and speak out against what is not right, the world will never change. Progress was never made from ignoring what we did not like or approve of. This hate is wrong, as is any other form of discrimination and prejudice, and it is the right thing to do to draw individuals together against it.
