Yes, I also think it was intentional.. Didn't even notice it until it was brought up here.
My God, how is it possible for a skater to turn around a strong disliker (me) into such a liker with a single programme? I don't see anything that can beat Oda's programme artistically.. No Evan, no Lambiel, no Plushy and no Jouby..
I think he should get an additional special mark for the effort and the wonderful details worked into the choreography.
Btw, I also thought Evan's LP was much better than last years and he does show improvement over the years.. But still, I cannot get behind him.. The feathers do not help either.

Until this year, the only thing Oda had ever done that interested me in terms of his presentation was his SP from the 2005-2006 season. Everything else from him has been very uninteresting.

His Chaplin LP this year has a similar kind of feeling that his '05-'06' SP had. It is playful.

There are definitely still skaters out there who are more artistic and more skilled with their blades than Oda, but he has raised his level as a performer to a point where he can be taken seriously as a threat to win Worlds / Olympics.

Ok I read an artile in a japanese newspaper and found out that it was NOT intentional. He was so nervous that he didn't even notice that he forgot to zip it up.

and I agreed (and loved) a lot of what you wrote. I definitely didn't notice it as much until people began complaining about it. But he didn't do as much flapping pre-Tosca, IMHO.

Oh my, now that is funny!!
Typical Oda, overexcited enough to forget to zip up (or finish the combo into the barriers with the camera-man, or do too many triples..)

He wasn't as tall pre-Tosca either. Just saying!

His arms have never bothered me and I wish people would stop fixating on them and pay more attention to the rest of the package/program. He's always been more of a complete skater rather than a specialist at one segment - jumps, spins, etc. I think he's raised his levels in ALL aspects and expect he will continue to do the same. His footwork is riveting! And I'm sure anyone working with him on his jumps takes a whole different approach because of those extra inches. His goal this year is to be faster and make each element stronger. I think he's right on track with that - I sure have seen a difference in his skating from Worlds to now. I'm sure we'll continue to see him raise his PCS and GOEs. He's a very determined, dedicated athlete with his eyes focused on the same prize as every other male skater in the current elite ranks.

I'm sure they're all striving to do and be their very best. Which means we fans can not lose! And neither can any of them really, in the greater reality of life. They will all be stronger because of the striving.

Thanks be to the that we're along for the ride.

Sometimes it is tough to be an Evan fan. A lot of people really dislike his skating and are very vocal about it. Sometimes I get the impression on this board that as an Evan fan I am blind or somewhat delusional, but I don't really care what others think. I like Evan's skating always have, and hope to see him in Vancouver on the podium.

It is difficult, and I share in your hopes that he makes the podium (still think he and not Jeff should have been on the podium four years ago, but that's a whole other issue lol)

and it's hard not to fixate on the arms... they're long and they do whoosh around a bit... as for footwork, it reminds me a lot of Alexei Yagudin's - always getting the crowd roaring (in part because of the music) - yet it's more difficult (but not as refined as, say, Kurt) so I guess that's why I watch his upperbody... if he could control the look of the arms more I think the footwork would be even better. That's just me...

and yes I know I sound more like a detractor than a fan

You can plug in a lot of names in that statement. How many Plushenko fans feel he's getting criticized too much around here? How about those posters who like Patrick Chan? I'm sure they feel there's too much negativity targeted at him. As a Joubert fan, I don't think Evan attracts more criticism than Brian. IMO, the difference is that when it's our favorite, we pay more attention to the criticism than when it's some random skater we care less about.

The one exception to this is in dance; I'm not a DomShabs fan but I am sometimes appalled at the amount and level of nastiness they attract from some people. Saying Evan flaps his arms and has wonky technique on jumps doesn't even come close.

(Also, his costumes this season are ugly, but he's certainly not alone in that).

I wouldn't call them ugly, (he's worn uglier things). But people make jokes about skaters'costumes, and Evan's outfits are no exception. The funniest I've heard so far, was a 'porno crow' (about his lp costume).

I watched it and was underwhelmed. Maybe everyone saying how great it was raised my expectations too high? For me, Evan's hit or miss. Sometimes I like him, sometimes he's just meh.

I am always so impressed by Evan's power, which I think is nothing on the computer or TV screen like what it is to see him live. That said, I wish I could say that I could remember a sequence or a program that completely uniquely him. All of his programs start to blur together in my mind. Wish it weren't so.

Nobu Oda is a clever competitor with lovely knees, but I wish he would improve his posture. Footwork sections especially show some shortcomings that get masked by the impressive soft jumps, dervish spins and overall entertaining packaging.
