Just glad Johnny got silver. Maybe he'll sneak into the GPF.

Hmmmm, come to think of it, I actually think this might be possible. Kozuka and Rippon took themselves out of the running with tonight's performances, Plushenko can't go with one event, Chan's out, Verner may implode at Skate America, tonight's version of Takahashi might show up at Skate Canada, Abbott's probably out unless he can win Skate Canada, throw in some possible injuries....who knows what'll happen. This GP series has been so unpredictable so far.

grand prix standings

1) ODA 15+15 =30
2)Joubert 9+15 =24
3) Weir 9+13 = 22 - ?

Kozuka, Rippon, Borodulin joins voronov and Ponsero in not qualify for GPFS.

Next grand prix (USA) has Lysacek and Verner competing with 13 points each . scultheiss even if he wins will only score 20 points hence he is out of the race.

In CANADA, Chan will act as a spoiler.
Field Has Brezina with 11 points, Contesti with 9, Takahashi with 9, Abott 7, KVDP with 7.

Joubert is through to finals as only contesti, takhashi and Brezina are the only athletes who can match his points or beat him, but anything short of victory will not allow each one of them to beat him. so Joubert is through

If chan wins the grand prix in canada johnny is through to finals (i believe), because it will only leave one athlete with points and position to beat Johnny to qualify for finals.
If brezina wins and Kvdp or abbott comes second will also allow the progress of Weir.

Johnny should pray for healthy return of Chan to competition, if not there are enough points for others to qualify

Reposting my calculations from the Johnny's Angels Message Board(and may I mention I love how GoldenSkate breaks paragraphs automatically?)

He's currently third in the standings behind Oda and Joubert, with 22 points and and overall score total of 416.25, lower than Voronov and Rippon's totals, which doesn't bode well for any score tiebreakers. He would need for less than four people to pass him and there are currently seven men who could theoretically do it:

Evan & Tomas: Both competing at Skate America, which around 30 points more from their first event than Johnny had going into his second, and with relatively little competition at their second event I suspect-unless Tomas has one of his meltdowns-that they will take the top two spots in some order and in.

Micheal Brezina: Competing at Skate Canada, would need at least silver. It should be noted at this point that the field there's kind of stacked, but hey, so was this one, so he might do it. But there's

Daisuke Takahashi & Samuel Contesti: Also must win at least silver, and with decent scores. Now we see all three of the above mentioned cannot pass him, because there's only two spots with which to do it. Reduce number of possible men passing Johnny to six. Then throw in

Jeremy Abbott & Kevin van der Perran: Must win Skate Canada. Then they would pass him automatically as 1st and 5th trumps 2nd and 4th. But as we've seen, there are already three guys cluttering up the top two spots, and they'd knock out of them out. In short, the most amount of men that can pass Johnny at Skate Canada is two. Reduce number of possible men passing Johnny to four.

So in short, the worst Johnny can do is 1st alternate, and that's only is Patrick Chan doesn't make the top two at Skate Canada, and then if it's Jeremy or KVDP winning silver there he's still in. It'll be interesting to see how Patrick recovers from his thigh injury; it could be the deciding factor.
Whether Johnny wants to make another trip to Japan, though, is another question all together.

I've been busy all morning and just saw the results - I'm so happy Brian won. I know he didn't skate the best program he could, and normally I'd say that I don't like this strategic LP thing again ... but in this case, more than the win, more than qualifying for the GPF, I think Brian needed to win an LP - which, as Medusa noted, he hadn't done in international competition in nearly three years. Brian had to get that off his back, because it looked like it was becoming a huge distraction. Good for him, and good for Michal and Johnny! What a lovely and unexpected podium!

Not sure about that outfit, but at least it doesn't look like Brian's wearing Staviski's cast off costumes. Brezina is so cute!

Obviously some great skaters didn't do so great here, but hopefully for all the people for whom this is the first GP, we'll see them in better form next time.

I am happy that Joubert's jumps looked so very solid this time, except for the 3A. His 3S looks ridiculously easy. I am torn on this one though, on the one hand I think he should just go for two Quad Toeloops, because he is solid with that jump (I also think his Quad Toe is prettier than Plushenko, despite the fact that Brian has less height on his - but it seems more fluid, and he doesn't let his back drop 10m when he is landing it). But then - his 3S looks so easy, so he maybe he should continue doing 4S. Truth is though, that he only landed it once, and that was underrotated (before 07/08 though, so it counted.

His Quad Sal was rotated.

It's his second Quad Toe that was suspect.

I wouldn't say Brian's Quad is more fluid at all. He goes into the jump with less speed, his landing is always swingy, and he muscels the rotation (usually not getting perfect rotation either). Plushenko uses the entrance speed and his blade to get up in the air and pull the jump rather than force it through.

At least he got two level 3s for the Step Sequences in his short. I'm much more worried about the point loss due to the edge calls on his flip. I hope he finds the definite jump layout soon with enough time to get used to it.

he needs some alterations for sure. his 147 for the long won't compete for a gold medal in vancouver. at least he has some time to peak for the olympics. he needs major upgrades in the long and also to get to the point where he has no edge call as you mentioned. a negative here and there adds up fast. he might need that second quad if he's going to fub the 3 axel and have no first quad combo jump. i think that's his plan. he's not as good with the hard combos like plushenko or lambiel. sometimes, though, he'll get a great quad/3 toe in, but it's not consistent yet.

Heartbroken for Abbott.

Happy for Brezina. That is where solid jumping gets you. And it should.

as for plushenko's back "dropping 10m" when landing the quad, it's called "checking your landing." as you know well, 9 times out of 10, the guy has to somehow stop his rotation from a fast spinning quad in order to vault himself up again for a triple twist. he can't very well do so if he's letting his free leg swing around uncontrolled (a la joubert) and with an upright posture. his landings are exactly why he can do this hard quad/3 toe combo time and time again. his back dips down just slightly for momentum and doesn't detract from the jump at all, imho. and he spins like a top, it's no wonder he can do jumps that no one else can do in competition.... 3 axel step out to 3 flip... 4/3/3..

Takahashi didn't do well? Phooey! But congratulations to Brian and Johnny! And Michael.

Nerves must be really raw this year. Everyone's falling all over the place. Either that, or they're coating the ice with molasses. Anyone check the Zamboni?

I'm just thrilled for Jouby!!!:bow:
Just like Medusa said, there's a reason why he's been a consistent world medalist since 06 and European medalist since 04. Everyone ready to write him off immediately after TEB, may I just say 'take it s***ers!' Sorry for language, way too happy for Joubert's win..

I'll eat the crow. Joubert skated well and deserved to win. As people pointed out, his score isn't enough to challenge for gold yet, but his consistency is to be applauded and yeah, I underestimated him.

Actually, Joubert has been a European medalist since 2002: here's the podium from that season. Other than that, I think it's never a good idea to read too much into the result of one GP - which is what many people seem to have done.
