Pardon my ignorance, but isn't there any canadian folk music worth of using for the OD specially in the Vancouver olympic season?? All the top 3 teams doing flamenco and now Chong/Gfeller doing music from a soundtrack (how folkish!! :chorus with pseudo tango costumes makes me go

That is actually quite an interesting question. What would be an example of a traditional Canadian folk dance? An Irish jig?

they did hoedowns, too, in Canada? right?

Maxwell and Traxler did a "Native American" dance a few years back for their OD which was interesting.

I think that would be very challenging. I believe that Native American dances are by and large communal celebrations. That is, they consist of very simple steps repeated over and over -- the point being that everyone in the community takes part, babies, old people and everyone in between regardless of skill.

In constrast, many European folk dances became more and more intricate over the years, leading to troops of professional entertainers who performed before audiences. I don't think there is a Native American equivalent of Michael Flatley, for instance.

Probably too much of a generalization, but still, I think it would pose a challenge to the choreographer.

Hmm so for the final flight we have Country, Flamenco, Country, Flamenco. Better than the Country Country Country line up at TEB; I can't complain!

I'm excited to see W/P's OD at its full potential and of course for V/M to kick ***.

Andrea CHONG / Guillame GFELLER CAN
    OD French Musette

Finally got to watch this from IN's "ondemand"

Total lack of 'folk' character. .

She has white gloves and a little black dress with a strap on one shoulder secured by a large pouffy black flower on the shoulder and a thin belt.. He has a blue ascot, a white shirt, black jacket & pants.
    Twizzles totally out of synch.

Rotational lift about his shoulders that rotates about his chest.

A lot of this is out of synch.

    Score 40.39

Carolina HERMANN / Daniel HERMANN GER
OD Das Kufsteiner Lied (Die Perle Tirols)
    Mei Vatta i a Apenzeller

Liederhosen on him, dirndl on her and pigtails
    Very bro/sis appropriate

The second song, they were not able to keep up with at all (I'm not sure anyone could...)
She did more turns in the twizzle than he

    Score.42.78 (total 68.07) into 1st

Madison HUBBELL / Keiffer HUBBELL USA
OD Ukrainian Folk Dance: Bukovinski Dance by Suzirya Ensemble; Dibro Vchanka by Suzirya Ensemble

Typical Ukrainian outfits. She has little white apron

First step sequence way too fast for them, and what they're doing has no Ukrainian character and is way behind the music
    too much posing
Circular step very good-character and all. What happened? Trip by Kierffer with wide swinging leg?
Twizzles OK-I think. Missed part of it.

    Score 44.49 Total 75.63

Ekaterina BOBROVA / Dmitri SOLOVIEV RUS
    OD Russian Folk Dance: Yablochko

    Both are Russian sailors
Starts well. Nice heel and toe action, typical of sailor dance
She trips and Falls. He helps her up
    Twizzles out (they're rather shaken)
    Ends OK

    Score 45.92 Total 76.01 1st place -2.00 deduction

Emily SAMUELSON / Evan BATES USA
OD American Folk: Dixie Chicks Medley

Evan in leather vest (fringed) with conchos, jeans & leather chaps & light blue denim shirt & black cowboy hat
Emily in red with v neckline & cap sleeves and cut out back with ponytail

    Twizzles OK, quite fast
    Lift pretty ordinary
I still find the "White Trash Wedding" part rather odd-Evan starts doing sheepish stuff to acknowledge the
words, but Emily is not skating like someone just about to deliver a baby. Unison breaks and they got a
bit close to each other on the crossing part of the footwork.

    Score 51.49 SB Total 82.96

Kaitlyn WEAVER / Andrew POJE CAN
    OD Spanish Flamenco
Very lacy, ornate Flamenco outfit on Kaitlyn (black & red lace) Red and black flounces on the skirt.
Poje is vaguely toreadorized-black with red vest with epaulets.

She has a disappearing red fan like Pechalat's from 2007. She fans herself during the lifts. A bit odd in the standing on his
besti squat lift, but very effective on the rotational lift.

Nice stamping and skirt swishing to show flamenco.
First step sequence a little self conscious, second I enjoyed a lot.

Twizzles, second set significantly slower than first, but done.

Score 51.18 SB Total 83.36, still ahead of S&B

Nathalie PECHALAT / Fabian BOURZAT FRA
OD American Country: Thanks God, I’m a Country Boy
Fabian in red shirt with leather fringes and chaps
Nathalie in spiffy red boots and a short orange hula skirt, as at TEB. She still has a whip? lasso at her waist and
    a blue bandana & pigtails

    Better unison than at TEB
Nice smooth lift, flips over then flips back
Twizzles fast. At 400K I can' t tell whether they were perfectly synchronized.
Kept the character thoughout, I thought.

    Audience clapped along nicely!

    I liked it.

    Score 56.05 Total 91.60 into 1st

Tessa VIRTUE / Scott MOIR CAN
OD Flamenco: Farrucas by Pepe Romero
Scott all in black with black pants and vest and white shirt.
Tessa in very long black skirt with a hot red lining and a camisole top Victoria Secretish

Tessa nearly falls on the corner. Shouldn't effect the level of anything much - it was at the end of the rink.

tapless tap (reminiscent of B&A last year) sort of effect with all the heel noises and the way you can't really do that much
    stomping in ice dance.

Love the way she works the skirt and the lining to get the character
twizzles kind of off & wild (slip affected them, I think)

More stumbling, another trip. SHorten that skirt!

    Lift very nice

Their arms are very nice and flamenco-ish throughout

Twist double twist to end (no kidding)

    Score 60.57 Total score 101.36

Dare I say, that is kind of HIGH?

Seriously. It seems like it's a very narrow KnC.

I liked S/B over W/P. I thought music was getting better over W/P. They got standing ovation.
