The 3 U.S. Sectional Championships are taking place this week -- these are the final qualifiers for 2010 U.S. Nationals for the skaters/teams without byes.

Easterns and Coasts started yesterday (there were live online results for Coasts but not Easterns for some reason), while Mids starts today.

Does anybody know how Melissa Bulanhagui did? It looks like she finished 4th in the SP, but how about the FS?

How does this work? I mean I know one has to qualify from Regionals to Sectionals, but is it the Top 4 from each Sectionals that qualify to Nationals? That's all I want to know. I've been following Melissa's progress little by little since this summer because I heard about her 3axel. :)

WOOHOO!!!!!

I just now saw all the protocols, results, et al over at www.icenetwork.com , and it definitely looks like Melissa Bulanhagui is going to Nationals! Rock on, Melissa, rock on!

I was right, the Top 4 go to Nationals. Melisssa was 4th in the SP (actually she practically tied for 3rd with the other girl, and both girls were only 1 pt. below the 2nd & 3rd place finishers), and then she came in 2nd in the FS (only 2 pts. below the 1st place finisher, but she was 6 pts. ahead of the 3rd place finisher), which means she came in 2nd Overall! :)

Doesn't look like Melissa tried her 3A here, but I'm hoping she goes for it at Nationals. After all, she has NOTHING to lose! In fact, here is a little inspiration for her ala courtesy of Apolo Anton Ohno ~ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9HMjeTwuIg

:love:GOOOOOOOOOO MELISSA!!!!!!!!!!

p.s. take that chuckm/chuckiem, who told me during TEB (after I was upset about Sasha pulling out & went to look for the American 3A girl that I read about ealier in the summer), and he derided Melissa, saying that she wouldn't even make it out of Regionals, et al. Well she proved you wrong, sucker!

EDITED TO ADD: as did Emily, lol. :D

What has happened to Molly Oberstar, Chrissy Hughes and Tenile Victorsen? Are they injured or retired?

Chrissy Hughes and Tenile Victorsen did not compete this year (I've heard that Victorsen may have retired but don't know for sure about Hughes). Oberstar competed at Finlandia Trophy in October (which gave her a bye through Regionals) but withdrew from Midwestern Sectionals. I don't know the official reason for her withdrawal.

My understanding was Chrissy battled with injury and pain which never got better and prevented her from doing the jumps. I met her mom at Nationals last year, she could not get the right diagnosis or treatment and not sure if she could continue competing. Most likely, she decided to go to college. It's a shame, she's so talented, I really enjoyed her skating.
