Adios Yuna Kim
Era of Kim

If one thing that had garnered greater attention this winter apart from 'You from another star' drama in Korea, it has got to be Yuna Kim. In January 2014 most well received commercial appeal ranking, the 23 years old figure skating queen quashed "Little Thousand Thousand" [Nickname for JoenJiHyun Character] and is ranked no.1.

Vancouver Olympics were once upon a time the final stage in Yuna Kim's memory. "For a long time, I have already considered Vancouver to be my last competition where I gave my all. When the result happened, I thought I could finally relaxed and breathe. I have never considered I could have kept my peak condition beyond 20 years old, that is far too difficult" In 2006, Shizuka Arakawa was the first in Asia who won an Olympic Gold medal in figure skating, 24 years old, she established the eldest figure skater to have won the Olympic championship.

After Vancouver, Yuna Kim has largely retired from competitive figure skating internationally, she gained Silver in 2010 and 2011 world championships. She still remember her tears from the podium of 2011 Moscow, "Maybe because I left figure skating for too long, during competition I was so nervous, my leg were shaking. The moment I finally stood on the podium, too much emotions entered my head, I am aware my tears flew but I could not control my emotions."

Not so long ago, Yuna Kim announced she is retiring from all 2011/2012 competitions, to focus on the PyeongChang Winter games bid, and participate in all sort of United Nation/UNICEF events, as well proceed to her commercial work, variety show recording, take on trips where she wouldn't have to bring her skating boots along, she turned these dreams into reality. In the meantime, Korea figure skating fell into despair, at world championships 2012, Kwak Ming Jung's short program ranked 28th did not proceed to the free skate stage, this result in only a single entry for Korea as a host for the next Winter Olympic games.

Korean Media once again put pressure onto Yuna Kim, in the summer 2012 when Kim came to China to take part in the Artistry on Ice show, once again attracted massive Korean Press attention, the questions they asked has nothing to do with the ice show performance, but they used all sort of examination, different angles of questions to 'interrogate' to see if Kim will reconsider competing. Facing the pressured cross-examination, Kim Yuna still did not confirm anything, "It is too early to discuss this topic, I haven't made any decision."

After 2 weeks returning to Korea from Shanghai, Yuna Kim finally called for a personal press conference, "Over the last year, I had been motivated by all the young skaters that I train with, I thought if there's something I can do for them. To return to competition, my role is not an Olympic Gold medalist, but an ordinary athlete of the Korean National team." This surprised everyone at the press conference, even the young skaters who she trains upon hearing she is to have the press conference all wondered if she is to announce her formal retirement.

Yuna Kim's Olympic Gold changed the history of Korean figure skating. During 2009 Korean National championships in ladies, there were only 8 people taking part. In 2014, this number became 26, while 44 girls reported took part in the Juniors competition. Majority of them took up figure skating because of Yuna Kim. Just like what she described during the PyeongChang games bid, her dream is to help the young sport people to give them the chance to realize their dream, and what she can do is to help them directly to the Olympic stage.

Of course there are many who doubted Kim who left competitive skating for over 1 year already whether she still have her capability, even from her show performance point of view, in her 2 show programs in 2012, she performed "Fever" without any jumps, and "Someone like You" gala only contained a 2A and the most basic 3T. There are also reports in the Korean press to say "Yuna Kim's leg is no different than any ordinary university student, she lost the muscle tone of professional athletes."

However behind all these public scrutiny, Yuna Kim has always maintained her hard work. When she came to Shanghai in June, she brought her trainer, and behind the corridor of Eastern Athletic Center, she kept up with her training, jogging, squats, basic power balance training, Yuna Kim completed everything with great care not missing a thing. Maybe the decision was surprising, but she has always kept her preparation carefully for this decision. Therefore, when she come back after 1 year's time and parachuted her way to won the 2013 world championships, it was not a big surprise. This accomplishment won 3 entries to the Winter Olympic games, with 16 years old Park So Youn and 17 years old Kim Hae Jin both directly benefited from this result.

Since entering Olympic season, 6 days a week, everyday for 6-7 hours of grilling training took tolls on Kim's physique to the point of exhaustion. By end of September, Korea Skating Union announced Kim had serious right leg bone fracture and will not able to take part in the Grand Prix series, at the same time she just celebrated her 23rd birthday. "When the diagnosis came, I accepted it calmly. Because all these times, my skating career has always accompanied with various big and small injuries. This is the last one, so no matter how,I will overcome it."

In the 4 short weeks after, Yuna Kim resumed training. The choreographer David Wilson who worked with Yuna for several years and a witness to her growth said "Yuna has a special spirit of doesn't like to lose, this enables her to accomplish everything today. It is like standing on the edge of a cliff, many people may be scared of falling off that cliff and wouldn't take another step, but she can be there dancing on that ledge." [This mightn't be from a recent documentary? Someone correct?]

To possess such mighty heart she has been considered as Winter Olympics Gold favourite, especially to have never fell from the podium in her entire competitive career is not something anyone can achieve, she used her Silver and perfect performances to meet world's great expectations. "Many years from now, when I look back to my professional career I wish to say: 'I have really worked hard, really give it my all', I no longer have any single regret or misgivings, to me this is the most beautiful ending.'

Because there are so many halos (of accolades and adulation), and also because we know behind all that are beautiful were the pain and suffering of mind and body, it enables Yuna Kim to look even more forward to an ordinary life, "I wish people can forget me, so I can live with freedom". May be on an earth that still spins somewhere in the universe, Yuna Kim can return to that earth she misses, and in that beautiful world with spotless clean ice, that allows her to skate because it bring her happiness.

news in korea..

apparently the public in korea still wants an appeal regarding sochi.. and ask the korean skating union to do something about it.. however yuna does not want to appeal and wants the whole matter rest itself..

one of the ksu's officials already resigned this week.. after the poor performance of their speed skaters/short trackers.. and the whole viktor ahn drama..
