Korean letters are alphabets. It isn't like Chinese characters.
So, basically it is same as writing YuNa's name as YuNa Kim in English.

Cosmos, correct me if I'm wrong, but basically they take the sound of the name in English and than translate into the Korean alphabet right? For example, for Evan's name, the first symbol is "E" (there really isn't an a V sound) and the second group of symbols is AN. It's not an exact translation, but it gives the Korean readers the idea....

Because there aren't perfect English translations for all the Korean alphabet symbols, the Korean names that are romanticized often have variations. This is also the reason why Yu-na may also be Yeon-A, Yun-A or just Yuna. (Per Phil Hersh: http://newsblogs.chicagotribune.com...c----or-transliterated----spelling-being.html)

ETA: Sounds like a good lineup!

Quite a line-up! Skating royalty and the destined 2012 world champs Carolina Kostner and Patrick Chan. Too bad the neither Virtue/Moir and White/Davis could make it.

No such thing as destiny lol. I really hope YuNa doesn't come back to competitive skating; i sensed at times thejoy was lost and she did it for her country. Unlike other nations, Korea seems so dependent on their 'few" national heroes. USA, Russia, Canada and all have so many athletes to look up to but the pressure on Kim is almost tragic - your value should not be on one or two athletes.

Basically you are right. The rule is to make one-to-one correspondence in sound. I would write Evan as 이반 in Korean letters. The correspondence is E-이, V-ㅂ, A-ㅏ, N-ㄴ. But the ATS-site wrote Evan as 에반. They thought E-에 (like E in Emily).
But, I never knew there really isn't V sound in Evan.

Oh, I meant I couldn't find a "v" sound in Korean. Maybe I just missed it when I looked it up.

The story of how the Korean alphabet, the hangul, was developed is inspiring. The prevailing story is that King Sejong the Great wanted his scholars to develop a simpler writing system so that more people could learn to read and to write. The existing system, based on Chinese, had thousands of symbols and could be learned only by people who had a lot of leisure time (in other words, mostly the nobility and professional scholars) and, of course, access to tutors. With the hangul, literacy could become more widespread. I think that earlier in this century, there was actually a national holiday to celebrate the founding of the hangul. Any country that celebrates its alphabet is impressive to me!

YuNa's show sounds wonderful! I'm deeply jealous of Korean skating fans.

I heard almost the same version but about the Japanese writing system. When they imported Chinese characters, very soon they understood how uncomfortable and unnatural the system was for the Japanese language, that is not similar to Chinese at all (grammar, pronounciation, etc.). They could change the system, adopt it. But they didn't. Precisely because they wanted to keep the education with the status of something previliged, for VIP only. If it's true, that sounds awful. The later created kana was used mainly for grammar purposes, while the main vocabs of the language were in kanji. Well, the current reality is that 12yo graduaters of elementary schools can't read newspapers. Basically, they are still illiterate. I am happy (and envious) that foreigners in Korea don't have to waste so much time to become literate as we have to do in Japan . Btw, in Russia we too celebrate the alphabet, like in Korea: Slavonic Literture and Culture Day in May. It's not a public holiday, banks are open, but the celebration events are huge and colorful. Used to be in a new city every year. From 2010- always in Moscow.

That's interesting about the Russian alphabet holiday. Of course the Russian Cyrillic alphabet was also an invented alphabet, so there's a point in history that can be marked as its beginning. Who knows exactly when the Greek, Phoenician, Hebrew, or Arabic alphabets were codified. An alphabet-based writing system is a huge advantage for a language, because its small number of symbols makes literacy more universally accessible--to foreigners as well as native speakers, as you point out. Another advantage is the way alphabet letters fit on a keyboard.

I also hear that in Russia and other nearby countries, the first day of school is a huge celebration, with everyone wearing his/her best clothes, people bringing flowers to the teacher, and speeches. (My Bulgarian friends say that this it true in Bulgaria as well.) We Americans could learn a thing or two from that custom.

Yuna is so pretty- and is the face of ? how many Korean products?? Yuna drinks beer? I am kind of surprised, as I didn't think alcohol sales fit with her image. HMM. It would be so great to see her show. She has a great lineup of skaters as usual.

About ten product groups, I guess. She's of drinking age now and I think it fits the fun/chic image of her. The brand's sales were slumping among the young consumers, and it would be interesting to see how its new product "Ice Point" would do.

She is endorsing 8 companies right now.

Beer is considered for thr young in Korea and that is why the company hired her.

Yuna looks awesome in the ad, every year she grows she looks better and better and you didnt think it would be possible to look even prettier than before, I ve lost count of her advertisment she has done, I remember her young one with lolipops and her being in the nature, is there somewhere that all are gathered together? :)

Thanks for the links! YuNa looks splendid. I especially like the jewelry ads. One of them (I think it's the fourth one down in the jewelry section) used a very different pose and dramatic lighting to make her look especially glamorous.
