I'm really hoping for Judy Blumberg to commentate this morning. That way I can actually learn a bit about CD.

Happy Birthday Tonichelle. Watch later. It will be OK.

Edited to add - I just saw that Judy is the Technical Specialist for Dance so no commentating for her. Al least I know some of the things she is looking for.

Phew a couple of 9+s for B@A in the PCS. I'm not watching this just looking at the scores.

Uh huh. To the dance experts out there who can watch this, were B/A overscored or justly scored? Seems a wee bit high to me. And I love B/A.

1 Elizabeth Chan, Skating Club of San Francisco Inc
Jason Deveikis, Ann Arbor FSC

Nice teal blue dress, black pants white shirt.
This couple had a great deal of difficulty just performing the steps of the dance. At some points they actually stopped. They were wobbly in the dips and timing was very questionable throughout, I thought.

2 Stephanie Zastrow, St Paul FSC
Michael Lueck, Burnsville-MN Valley FSC

Considerably better than couple number 1. The first pattern was better than the second. They had a few little messups in the second and bounced rather than flowing through some of the turns.

3 Tanith Belbin, IceWorks SC
Benjamin Agosto, IceWorks SC
She in very elegant pale aqua dress with scarf like attachment from wrist to sleeve top on one arm. He in tails
Really good spedd.
Not crazy about the attitude turns-not smooth., Lovely down the long axis of the rink and in the side by side turns.. Nice dance lift to end.

22.60 22.42 total 45.02

The judges loved this better than I did.

4 Madison Chock, All Year FSC
Greg Zuerlein, Arctic FSC

She is aquamarine with silver spangles and strap less. He in tails.
Really a very nice dance--not as fast as B&A. A little scrambly in the steps down the long axis of the rink

5 Shannon Wingle, Arctic FSC
Timothy McKernan, Broadmoor SC

They had a nice lilting motion and waltz character. She appeared to catch a toepick and fell, or this would have scored quite well.
He says, "That's OK."

About the only thing I can do is count. Belbin/Agosto were on time. The first couple certainly wasn't. Forgot to count on the others.

Hubbels were pretty much on time with a couple of iffies.

Doris - can you tell me about one of the steps the man takes near the judges? Is he supposed to actually go down on one knee or is it supposed to be a lunge. Or is it sort of open to interpretation?

AFAIK, it is usually done as a lunge. He is not supposed to let his knee hit the ice. However, some variation in steps is allowed. I like the smooth attitude turn, but the judges rewarded B&A for bouncing through it to the music on the beat-so there is a bit of latitude in the couple's interpretation of each step.

Warmup Group 2
6 Madison Hubbell, Ann Arbor FSC
Keiffer Hubbell, Ann Arbor FSC

She's in a samba esque dress in red shading to orange and yellow  He's in tails.
I liked the attitude turn part, not so much the dip and turn part.
They were throwing snow from the blades in a few places.
Nice toe point.
Hi to the parents.

18.15 16.18 34.33

Ahead of Chock/Zuerlein

7 Lauren Corry, Washington FSC
Alexander Lorello, University of Delaware FSC

She's in a lovely light shaded blue dress strapless, flows very well
diagonal in dark blue

leg floppy in the attitude turns
snow from blades in quick steps
stumbled into first corner
Second pattern a little more smooth and confident

9.87 9.28 total 19.15

8 Jane Summersett, Broadmoor SC
Todd Gilles, Broadmoor SC

Light aqua dress with some see through side strapping Skirt kind of bunchy for the waltz

They seemed tight on the first segment of the first pattern and a bitt stumbly at the far corner of the rink. Snow throwing.
Krylova looking great in the KnC

16.0 14.72 Total 30.72

9 Katie Wyble, Center Ice & Blades of Western PA
Justin Morrow, All Year FSC

Dress pink and trim rather random and negligee like.. White slip. He in tails

The skating was wobbly at times.

12.50 10.57 total 23.07

10 Lynn Kriengkrairut, All Year FSC
Logan Giulietti-Schmitt, Ann Arbor FSC

Pale blue dress, pretty but a bit revealing for waltz. He's in a black peasant blouse (spangled) and black pants.

They lacked some speed and seemed to be thinking their way through the dance a bit.

Doris would that be Angelika Krylova who is coaching Sommersett and Gilles? If so, hell it would have been worth the $29 just to see her for a few seconds. I loved her!!!!

Thanks Doris. I will pay closer attention to that whole sequence. I'm also wondering about the first steps. There seems to be a wide latitude of ability there- as well as timing. Is that first step an indication of ability or just a matter of interpretation?

No one in that group had wonderful timing - at least not to my count. On the other hand, when I really counted all the Olympic couples in 2002, I only found one that was really on the beat.

Okay, someone who is watching, and who knows something about CDs, analysis: did Meryl and Charlie deserve to beat Tanith and Ben in the CD? Or has the USFSA dumped Tanith and Ben, believing Meryl and Charlie are now more likely to medal(if so, it'll end with them both off the podium. The scores way D&S are being treated at Europeans make that clear enough. All that will happen here is the judges will now have excuses enough to hold both teams down in Vancouver.)
