A Few Random Questions about Nationals

I apologize if one of these has been discussed ad nauseam but the Sasha Threads are just too long to search.

Senior Ladies

1 - How did Sasha get a bye to Nationals. She didn't skate in a Grand Prix or a Sectionals. I'm sure there was some mechanism in place to allow her to skate but I missed it along the way.

Senior Dance

2 - What is a Li+TRANS. It's listed in the OD's and the Free programs with no scores for any of them. If it's not something that is scored, why is it listed?

Senior Pairs

3 - Tanovich and Chau did not receive any credit for their FCCoSp . I didn't see it - even in the second viewing and they finished on time with their music. Is there another reason?

Sasha gets a bye because she won a medal at the last Olympics. As for your other queries, no clue.

LI+Trans is a transitional lift. It gets no points by itself, but it's existence is part of some of the PCS components grading. They are listed on the 'flight plan' filed by the dance teams so that the judges & technical specialist know which lifts to grade (and assign a level to). Although Li+Trans usually appears at the end of the program, it does not have to be in that location.

Because of her 4th place here, wouldn't she also technically have extended her bye period to 2011 Nats if she wanted to continue? (Not that I think she will, though.)

Hmm. I guess so. But of course she won't. She made clear she was coming back for the Olympics. Although come to think of it, it's not impossible that if she keeps training she could win nationals next year. But she already has a national title so I doubt it's even remotely in her plans. You never know though. Maybe she'll feel sad that her competitive days are once again over and just keep going.

Oh no, you know what? forget I said all that in the above post. I have no energy for another bout of Sasha speculation. I still love her. She's out of the picture. Let's all move on.

She would get a bye for 2011 Nationals for finishing top 5, but if she skipped 2011 and wanted to return in 2012 or later, she would not only lose the top 5 bye, but also the "reigning Olympic medalist" bye because she wouldn't be "reigning" any more.

ok thanks. I wasn't sure whether it was the top 5 or top 6 or whatever that get the bye to next year.

I haven't seen Tanovich and Chau's spin, but if they did the spin, and there wasn't a spin earlier in the program (which would cause the 2nd spin to get no points), then the usual reason for no points on a spin is that they didn't get the required number of rotations in any of the variations. Another reason is if the whole spin were done after the time ran out--which can happen while the music is still playing, but then there would be a time penalty as well as no points for the spin.

Thanks for the answers. I need to learn more about Dance. I missed the Olympic medal rule. I will have to look yet again at Tanovich/Chau's short program. I can't think that they went over time. They were right on and unless the arena sound system was way off... anyway they didn't have a problem in sectionals. I will have to look at all the spins again.

I wonder if anywhere the results can be viewed, please? So far I have seen only the competition page with the results of sp and fs. Why do they not use the kind of page e.g. Europeans use for competition results???

Does anyone know what the skaters (mainly the men and pairs) who had to wait a week for the gala did? I mean, did they just stay in the hotel? Did they train anywhere? Where they unhappy about the situation?

Some of the skaters went home, some stayed. For those that stayed, there was ice at another rink.

I'm virtually certain Tanovich/Chau didn't get credit on their FCCoSp because when they changed feet -- especially him -- they stepped way too wide. Here is the rule on that:

If the spinning centres (before and after the change of foot) are too far apart and the criteria of 'two spins' is fulfilled (there is a curve of exit after the first part and the curve of entry into the second part), the second part of the spin will not be called and will not be valid for the Level features. That results in the following:
* Short Program - the spin is not fulfilling the requirements, no Level & value will be given;
* Free Skating - the second part of the spin will not be called and will not be valid for Level features; the element becomes a spin in one position with no change of foot or a spin combination with no change of foot.

So since it was the short, it gets no level and value.
