Which compulsory dance will it be at the Olympics? Which team has a strong history with this dance?

Here are the highest scorers in Compulsory Dances this season:

1. Virtue/Moir (CD at Canadian Nationals)
2. Domnina/Shabalin (CD at Europeans)
3. Faiella/Scali (CD at Italian Nationals)
4. Belbin/Agosto (CD at Skate America)
5. Davis/White (CD at Rostelecom)/Khoklova/Novitski (CD at Europeans)
6. Kerr/Kerr (CD at British Nationals)

So, internationally, Domnina/Shabalin have had the highest scored Compulsory Dance this season, followed by Belbin/Agosto and Davis/White. Although they haven't competed yet this season, Delobel/Shoenfelder have long been very consistent Compulsory Dance skaters. Here is a thread with more information and various videos of the Golden Waltz from the 2009 Cup Of China:

It was drawn today, and it is the Tango Romantica. Here's how the teams did this season:

It was skated at Europeans and the teams who competed there finished in this order:

Domnina & Shabalin Europeans 2010 (1st)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ejHPxw_g2Z0&feature=channel

Khoklova & Novitski Europeans 2010 (2nd)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CShf0cn4UGM

Faiella & Scali Europeans 2010 (3rd)

Kerr & Kerr Europeans 2010 (4th)

Pechalat & Bourzat Europeans 2010 (5th)

Cappellini & Lanotte Europeans 2010 (6th)

Virtue and Moir finished first in the Tango Romantica at Skate Canada, and at Canadian Nationals. I can't find a copy of their Canadian Nationals performance:

Davis and White finished first in the tango romantica at Nebelhorn trophy, Rostelecom Cup, and NHK. The only copy of them skating it is at Rostelecom, where Crone / Poirier also competed.

Delobel and Schoenfelder did a monitoring session with the TR this week, and skated it at Europeans in 2006, for sure, although they have not competed this dance (or any other) this year.

Belbin & Agosto did not compete the TR this year. They won the Tango Romantica CA at 4CC's in 2006, but I couldn't find a video of it. They do share training ice with DomShabs, and coach Linichuk, so they should be well aware of what the TR should look like and how to do it.

Here's some greats of the past skating the Tango Romantica. I probably like G&P's version best.

For those curious about how this is judged, judging of the TR is discussed in the following link. I won't describe the exact steps and errors, as that is done in the document.

http://isu.sportcentric.net/db//files/serve.php?id=1442

ISU Communication 1567, page 8, describes the judging of the Tango Romantica

However, the PCS marks are fairly understandable to the average fan.

Skating Skills
Ice coverage without visible pushing; cleanness and sureness of steps; strongly curved
well rounded lobes; lobe to lobe transitions well controlled; controlled body weight
changes; light knee action; clean, tight, crisp footwork.

Performance
Perfect vertical and horizontal unison; good carriage and style; controlled body action;
nicely matched free legs; balance in performance between partners.

Interpretation
Expression of the typical changes between the soft and strong character of the rhythm,
relationship between partners reflecting the lyrical mood of this Tango. Well-defined
and strong edges should be skated with a lot of character using good knee action, tight,
clean footwork with matching free leg movements. For good presentation and
interpretation the body style and movements should reflect Tango rhythm.

Timing
Very precise and crisp timing, exact beat value for each step, sometimes syncopated to
bring out the Tango character.

And as to "syncopation" in tango dancing, the following link is useful. Not that Grishuk and Platov use quite strong syncopation, and as such, impart a really nice tango character to their Tango Romantica.

http://mailman.mit.edu/pipermail/tango-l/2008-January/006313.html

For example, in Tango, we have the "and-moment", when we suspend before surging. The engagement with our partner (both leader & follower) comes ahead of the first beat of the music. Musically, the bandoneon starts wheezing before the musician stomps his leg to punctuate the "1". If tango didn't have this suspension and surge, it feels flat.

Grishuk & Platov certainlly had good technique and good speed but this is a more "romantic" tango and there was nothing in their performance here that looked like they even knew each other! I preferred Klimova & Ponomarenko's version, good technique, not as fast but they actually looked like they enjoyed skating this dance together.

Yes, the dance is supposed to be more romantic than the Argentine, for example. However, I found K&P's ability to convey the character of the dance a bit inferior to G&P. We are talking about two all time great teams here, so of course both are excellent.

YMMV, however, as both performances are great.

After watching most of the clips so graciously provided my predictions after the CD are:

Domina Shabalin. Given the fact that Domina and Shabalin have already skated this dance recently, and done it well, I predict the will once again, do it well and be well rewarded.

Virtue and Moir. A dance like this plays to their strengths.

Belbin and Agosto. I think the international judges prefer their long leg line to Davis and White's speed.

Davis and White. Just 10ths of a point behind 3rd.

Thanks for the links!

It is amazing how we can compare this dance over a 30 year time period.

According to NBC this is the tech panel for the Dance
The ice dance technical panel is Marika Humphreys-Baranova (GBR), Francesca Fermi (ITA), and Katalin Alpern (controller, ISR). Halina Gordon Poltorak is the referee.

Wow, that was interesting to waqtch all of these videos!
If I don't mention the fall of Delobel/Schoenfelder, I find the order is like that ( out of recent couples)as top 6.
1. Virtue/Moir. Fantastic. Perfect technique and "tango-feeling" with a lots of small extra , which creates a feeling it is not even a CD.
2.Delobel/Schoenfelder. They dancing EXTREMLY closed to each other. They tough with strength, power.
3.Faiella/Scali. Surprisingly good. The techique is almost perfect. They have the strength, the closenest to each other, and clean edges.
4.Davis/White. The fastest and most virtuos in its edges. A bit less "tango-feeling".Very clean technique.
5.Domnina/Shabalin. Good edges, elegant. They are really dancing far from each other. In this way it is the worse of all.
She can have a little bit more strong" tango" carriage.
6.Pechalat/Bourzat. very good "tango-feeling". Good edges. Could be slightly more precise.

Let's see what is happening.
It is really a good part of the competition. The only problem, judges can use their "reputation PC points 3 times during the competition....)

Elena Tchaikovskaya, A great Russian coach who deserves more recognition

Check this out. Elena Tchaikovskaya is visiting with D/W and V/M this week before the start of the games to help them with the CD (which she of course designed along with Pahkamova and Gorshkov).

http://www.freep.com/article/201002...rts/Russian-great-to-visit-Canton-ice-dancers

This is really exciting news!

Elena Tchaikovskaya is a Russian Coach who I have a lot of respect for. She did great work for teams like Drobiasko & Vanagas. I love how Maria Butyrskaya talked about her at the 98 Games as a "strong woman". I think it is fantastic that she is helping out two great American couples with the intention of having them perform their best in the compulsory dance!

Agreed. Tchaikovskaya's influence is all over these Olympics. Her Tango Romantica is the CD. She coached Linichuk and Karpanosov as well as Zoueva (at the same time). Igor was coached by Tchaikovskaya's star pupil, Pakhomova. Now four of the top medal contenders are recipients of that influence through their current coaches. Pretty nice story. Good to see her getting some attention. Her record as a coach is overlooked far too often.
