I've been thinking what if we do have a reputation mark going into a major competition such as the Worlds or the Olympics? We would have avoided the tragic results like Tara Lipinski won over Michelle Kwan, or Sarah Hughes won over Irina Slutskaya.

In schools, a student's final score is determined by the final tests plus, for instance, the homeworks and the projects results. In workplaces, the evaluation of an employee is determined by his/her performance through a period of time plus several other criterias. The figure skating's SP is actually served as a reputation mark going into LP.

Since figure skating is subjective judging, why don't we reduce that one time subjectiveness by using a skater's competition results through out the whole season as a reputation mark going into the final competition - the World Championship. Add to the results from the World to determine the final result and the champion of that year's? For the Olympics, have a skater's four year competition results as the reputation mark going in. Add to the results from the Olympics to determine the Olympics champion. By doing so, I think, it could award what we believe the "true champion" instead of having the title to someone suddenly burst out from nowhere. Such a "champion" would likely fade away as quickly as he/she emerged, such as Tara Lipinski (Though she has had hip injuries to force her to stop competing.), Sarah Hughes, and Kimmie Meissner.

It, though, could not save the skaters coming back from the injuries or retirement since they don't have the full set of the competition marks of said period. (We could give these skaters bonus marks based on their old competition records.) But it could save a lot of real remarkable skaters who might otherwise have an off night or two.

    Just a thought.

I think we already have too much reputation scoring helping top skaters when they have off nights.
We saw for years that Ice Dancing was scored in the manner you are suggesting and what happened?

The IOC threatened to kick it out of the Olympics if they did not stop basing the scores in part on reputation from past events and years.

I think less reputation scoring would be good for skating and that more would hurt it and lead to more controversies.

how much the skaters have participated in the last quad's competitions and with what results reflects in the isu rankings already and their sort of privelage of skating in the last groups.

Furthermore, if reputation marks were to be justifiable and sort of 'legal' what fs fans would have to complain about then?

Can you imagine if ISU used their ridiculous ranking system and applied bonus "reputation" points to skaters per their rankings over the last four years?

I guess we might see Caro and Tomas as our two Olympic champions

If Caro and Tomas were ever CLEAN for two programs they easily could be olympic and world champions, or at least medalists, but instead we get the pop, lock, and splat show.

This system is already in place in figure skating.

At the world championship event, of course the skater who skates best at that event wins that event, just like the student who scores highest on the final exam scores highest on the final exam. The World Champion is the person who won that event, just like the Cup of China Champion is the skater who won the Cup of China.

Then afterwards all the points are added together and the ISU awards a big cash prize to the skaters who did the best overall throughout the season, including Worlds, Cup of China, the Nebelhorn Trophy, etc., just like the final course grade you get in school.

Last year the overall champions of figure skating were Yu-na Kim ($45,000 plus the honor of being the overall winner), Tomas Verner ($45,000), Savchenko and Szolkowy ($67,500) and Domnina and Shabalin ($67,500). This is on top of the money that they won at the World Championship contest and at other events during the year.

As for the Olympics, I don't think the International Olympic Committee would go along with a system that says, this skier fell on his downhill race at the Olympic Games, but let's give him a gold medal anyway because he sure did ski fast in events over the last four years.

This is the most ridiculous idea I've ever heard. The Olympics is a competition in which the winner is the person who skates the best at THAT COMPETITION. The winner is not the person who has been overall the most good over the last four years. They could have a separate prize for that, given by the ISU, but that's not what the Olympics are for.

I think the poster who started the topic is trying to figure out a way to strip Evan of the OGM he won fair and square on the ice.

Some said it would be the end of skating if Evan won, others said GS would implode and a few even claimed the world would come to an end if Evan won the OGM

Guess what - Evan won and there is still skating, GS is still going strong and the world has not come to an end. But we may have seen the last of Joubert

Noo don't say that! I thought Joubert was staying at least until 2012 Worlds in Nice? Skating will become so boring if Joubert and Verner quit - they are actually exciting to watch (when they don't bomb).

I don't want Joubert to quit but I do think if he skipped Worlds and took time off it might be better for him in the long run.

He really bombed at the Olympics . Tomas is kind of used to it already but I think Joubert must have really been upset.
And he has a horrible federation to deal with which doesn't help matters.

Maybe Joubert is the one who should go to Carroll. He looks like the Hollywood type and I am sure Evan could teach him his tanning secrets

well I lost 3-4 kilos from not eating the next days, became blue from crying and broke like 3 glasses of water. My mum was not happy for any of these. I told her GS is still running to calm her down but she didnt pay attention :boohoo:
Well at least now I can joke about it. :o World is coming back to its place.

Yeah, it seems like a fair idea...but for me it'd take some of the fun out of watching the sport? Not to be mean to skaters, but I like the fact that it's somewhat unpredictable and that my adrenaline and blood pressure go through the roof when skaters take to the ice...and that sometimes you get a skater who just has the skate of their life and surprises everyone...?

I think when a skater gets to the point where he/she routinely beats a skater who is considered more favorable by the judging panel, then he/she does begin to build positive reputation with the judging panel. We saw this during the 1996-1997 season with Tara Lipinski when she started routinely coming out on top over Michelle Kwan and winning the 1997/1998 Champion Series Final in Kwan's absence due to injury heading into the Olympics, we saw it during the 2000-2001 season when Sarah Hughes started routinely coming out on top over Maria Butyrskaya and when she outplaced both Irina Slutskaya and Michelle Kwan at the 2001 Skate Canada, thus building her reputation with the judges heading into the Olympics. We've also seen it more recently between Joannie Rochette and Mao Asada and now they are pretty much considered equals by an international judging panel in terms of their scoring. Showing a strong level of consistency and besting a favored competitor certainly helps a skater's marks and reputation with the judges.
