Well, Mirai Nagasu was also first after the SP in Cup of China but she finished off the podium after the LP. If the tech specialist is as strict as he seems to be here, I think Mirai could be in for some downgrades in the LP.

Yes, but she's mentally and technically stronger now. She has that mindset and mental fortitude of a champion (or champion to be) that I like to talk about. Frank did magic in a year's time. At 2009 Nationals, I could feel that she just wanted to give her title away. She hated being 1st after the SP in COC. Mirai hated the pressure then, but now she thrives off of it. Her URs are not as bad now. There's still room for improvement, but she's come a long way. She could definitely win the world title here, as long as she gets the scores she deserves.

The reason Mao got 'zero' is because she water it down to 2A+2t and repeat it another 2A later. You can do one solo 2A in the SP, so the first one got nada. Getting < is defferent because you are attempting a 3A, just failed to fully rotate it.

They DG'd her 3A, which then made it a 2A, then said her 2A = 0.

Technical excellence with all elements from jumps to step sequences + artistry + speed, she is probably fastest skater right now + good programs + nice spirals.

That's what she has. She didn't show it all right now, but we all know that.

Yes, she could. However, the poster I quoted seemed to think somehow Nagasu is the only one who is not vulnerable, which is just crazy talk, hence I had to point out no one is invincible.

Thank you. What a great skate. That step sequence is always something to behold. The first thing that struck me though is how much Mao has thinned. Someone please feed the girl. Did she just get thinner than she was in Vancouver? I don't know how she jumps with such skinny legs. I can't say much about the 3A because technical probing's not my forte, but I'm guessing it would've been ratified had the technical specialist been less strict. Nadia01 said this specialist is known for being particularly strict. I guess that's it?

Just got out of class and went to ISU to see results. Mirai in first and Yu Na Kim in SEVENTH? WOW. That's a shocker. I wonder if I read the results right...... did Yu Na fall or something?

That's what she has. She didn't show it all right now, but we all know that.

I don't love her spirals, but I have to say they've improved over the years. I just remember watching her at junior worlds..godness..she couldn't hold it for more than 2 seconds. But I think there are other skaters who have better sprials, Mirai, for one.

But if you're going to say something like "but other people do a 3-3" fine. But what people praise her for isn't that she just does a 3-3 it's how she does it. She like goes like 20 feet and both jumps have great height. Other combos people tend to underrotate the second jump or make it much smaller. That's a money combo.

That's very interesting. What's the standard procedure? I always thought DGed triples in combination in the SP were still counted. My hunch is that ISU has no official rules, perhaps some wishy-washy ones open to interpretation. Why give so much power to the technical specialist? Why not put it down on stone? Weird.

Yes..shocker is probably an understatement. Got a DG on her 3F, zero points for a botched layback spin and missed a segment of her spiral (resulting in a level 1). :(

I think he was talking about being at the podium. She looks strong, that girl. It's not like others are inferior to her, but she looked stronger than others. And Yuna is vulnerable right now, Mao too considering that her consistency is always a question. But those two also can surprise us every time...

Prolly the tech panel had a bad day or something. I remember Tat protesting that very strongly b/c she said Mao shouldn't be penalized like that. That's where she did so badly that she lost any chance at making GPF Tokyo.

Wow. I never saw that coming.......
I'm not a fan of Yu Na and think she's overrated, but you do have to feel bad for someone when everyone's expecting you to do well and you make mistakes like that. I haven't heard of anyone making mistakes like those on the layback and spiral. Gotta feel bad for her.

I hope Speedy gathers all the judges, tech controllers and the respective panels for the various disciplines and work out a common set of standards. Moves legal in one competition and potentially illegal in the next, skaters suddenly getting music deductions ... it's getting too much.

But then again, it's Speedy. Not going to happen.
