Cup of China will have perhaps the most interesting field of competitors of the Grand Prix Season. Faiella and Scali and Pechalat and Bourzat have been very close, first one team ahead and then the other, for the last several years. They have taken very different approaches to competing this year. Pechalat and Bourzat decided to get their programs out as soon as possible, to get as much input as possible, particularly on the short dance. They have won all three competitions, but have decided to scrap their Amelie short dance program and replace it with a Dr. Zhivago (Lara's Theme) short dance. How rapidly they will have been able to be comfortable with the new program is, of course, a question mark.

Faiella and Scali, on the other hand, will debut their programs at Cup of China. Faiella and Scali train with Natalia Linichuk these days, so although they have not gotten short dance feedback from judges, Linichuk definitely has. Her junior team, Pushkash & Guerreiro has been competing on the Junior Grand Prix, and has won both their short dance competitions.

Those two teams should be first and second.

Third place should be between Bobrova and Soloviev who debuted their programs at the Russian test skate, and looked very prepared. Hoffman & Zavozin finished second to Pechalat at one summer competition and won another. This should put them in quite good shape to compete here.

Pechalat and Bourzat in a breeze for the win with Bobrova/Soloviev as standouts. Failella/Scali have reputation now. Podium will be interesting.

I watched it on icenetwork, but I had a ton of feed troubles. I'll have to watch it over later and hope the quality will be better

At first I couldn't get on at all. I missed Cannuscio & Lorello and part of Guan/Wang
38.34 (C&L)
First few couples you couldn't see the scores, they were down off the bottom of the page

Guan and Wang
Waltz No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich

even I saw at least one flat edge in the midline step
plus it was slow
40.19

Yu & Wang
Blue Danube
Same costumes as SC
His still looks like a cowboy shirt with a cummerbund

GW to start
the tinkly version in GW2 is suspect
twizzles. They work through them, but his especially are not smooth
tangoing
Is there a problem with this music feed?
closer on midline than last couple
fake violence ending
feed freezes
45.33

Hoffman & Zavozin
hoffman in a cutaway
max looks trimmer
tails
norah in a very low cut spaghetti strap number in aqua
with elaborate beading on the bodice
midline better speed & flow
gw to skater's waltz
gw2
gw1 (her thigh was parallel in STD)
crossing twizzles very cool with speed
rotational lift to finish
they still are a bit sloppy
52.69
1st

Ralph and Hill
Ten Minutes Ago; This is a very schmaltzy song
The feed is suddenly weird-stretched 20% wide and the screen distorted. It surely makes their lean look greater.
She is in way too much fabric on the skirt lilac green pin
gold lame bra on top
gold specked elbow gloves sort of
clip in hair
he has dark blue pants puffy sleeve shirt loud lavender vest
with a lot of gold trim (this seems way too much for a Richard Rodgers schmaltz song)
good edges
screen distortion
twizzles not good limited forward motion/slow
jump into midline
little pair spin to end
48.70 into 2nd

Next warmup group

Bobrova & Soloviev
Bobrova black bodice with lots of sparklies, black elbow gloves, very pink skirt
pink hair pieces with feathers & pink pipecleaners
lots of gold neck chains
with lots of ruffles
he's got white not well fitted white tie shirt, black jacket pants
Delilah
twizzles
he goofs up in the twizzles
speed into the midline step (I like
this step)
gw1
gw2
gw looked pretty good
lift he throws her into it,not smooth
full view of her very skimpy black underpants (costume deduction?)
55.85 into 1st
-1 deduction (maybe the costume, maybe the length of lift that exposed the costume)

Huang & Zheng
His shirt appears to be torn up after a mugging
and pulled out of his pants and uneven
purple vest all awry
black tie flopping hanging
she's in white pale purple edging, shaded into the white
pretty neckline little pale purple flower on one shoulder
Waltz No. 2 by Dmitri Shostakovich
3 sets of twizzles of not good quality
midline very slow
I liked the other Chinese couple better
gw slow
not down enough in the std
little rotational lift transition
fancier lift to finish
Audience, home town or not, not going wild
49.7

Hubbells all in black
Madison's v neckline slit to the navel long sleeves black sequeins
addams family
blond morticia with french braid in the back?
waltz jump
haircutter rotational lift
screen freeze bad
gw1
looking correct but a little slow
cartwheel lift him
midline Kieffer trips falls
both fall complete disruption of program
jump into twizzles
lots of flair on the ending
Krylova giving hugs
44.47 -3 deduction 6th (ouch)

Faiella and Scali
Faiella in white, v. ugly
My fair lady
huge black& white bow (why?) like a christmas package
almost turtle neck
very fancy whie fabric
big white ruffles at wrists
black & white bow with pipecleaners in pulled back hair
Dress is a take on the one from the movie
He got his foot tangled up in her skirt lucky to get out of it
more really wide black andwhite ribbon around most of the waist
Massimo in a business suit white shirt tie
jump into twizzles slightly out of sync no big deal
gw1
layback probably won't count
timing a little off could be feed synchng
O faces
Rain in Spain
midline seems a little slow
57.21
Into 1st

Pechalat and Bourzat
Pechalat all in red with a black edge to the scoop neckline
and black net elbow gloves with no mitts (her Amelie costume)
Bourzat with red tie grey pants, black jacket white shirt
Lara's Theme
twizzles immediately
freeze
gw
lunge into rotational lift to end
What my computer would show me, it was pretty good

F&S got slammed on the tech score. Probably the Golden, but also the problems with stepping on the skirt (which I saw on replay, but missed during a feed freeze)

Think both P/B and F/S have real winners in their programs, but the latter were too messy. Her skirt got caught in his blade, the twizzles were out of synch and overall they were rough

P/B were pretty clean, seemed quite fast. New program is a work in progress, but done very well. I particularly liked the spread eagles out of the first set of twizzles. Of course, it helps that they are stunning and their costumes were very nice. But I'm biased, they are my favorite team.

BobSolvs had twizzle errors, but their compulstory was strong.

Boy Hubbell fell in the step sequence, and she tripped over him, and they missed about 1/2 - 1/3 of their step sequence, and their twizzles, which came after, were also unclean. Up until then they were clean, but slow. I wish they would change the opening of their program, as it is a bit too close for comfort for a sibling team.

Ralph/Hill desperately need costuming and packaging help, but were solid.

The lead is almost entirely from tech points. F&S got hit several places-one of the step sequences low, I suspect, since its hard to get your edges correct with your skate caught in a skirt. Also the GW1 was no better than lev3, I think, and P&B have been getting lev4. I got feed errors in GW2 but the layback was not to spec either, I think (anyway 6 points lost in tech)

Good for P/B that started the season early and focused. That is why they deserve to be in such lead. They have not just understood what they got to do to get the levels on the GW but figured out that "Amelie" and the tango is not quite the best vehicle to maximize their chances.
I saw Doris you knew they will change the SD, when this decision was posted anywhere, because I could not find a link?

F/S dance will get better, good concept but they need mileage, It was rough.
I like B/S SD a lot, that will be a winner, but please skate the damn thing cleanly. They are always messing up an element.
Poor Hubbell's. That was a disaster.
Solid debut for Ralph and Hill.
Our feed was very good in Canada, by the way.

There is an interview on IN of P&B. It made the disclosure.

If your feed was good, then perhaps we will get youtubes of these some time!

Did you get the distorted version of R&H? Or was it right size?

I know that F/S's SD didn't get it's best showing but I really appreciate in general how the past few years they've really been attempting to put together very detailed and complete programs on the ice- from the music and steps all the way down to the detail in the costumes. The costumes in this particular one looked like they stepped straight out of the film version of My Fair Lady.

I hope they get back into things for the FD.

I also liked P/B's new SD. I think that soaring music really fits them well. I can't wait to see it later in the season when they will have progressed with the expression even more.

So is Faiella/ Scali:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IKMDUnYG9nM

Here's the dress Faiella is emulating:

Another shot:
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/41800000/jpg/_41800188_myfairlady220.jpg

It's the Ascot scene. The dress is extreme, because that is, so I've heard, part of the Ascot gig-black/white/huge hats/big costume statements.

Why they didn't use the Embassy Waltz scene and music, I haven't a clue.
http://www.georgegroves.org.uk/warners3_files/myfairlady06.jpg
She's even wearing an updo, favored hair style of Faiella.

Now that I get to watch the dance without screen freezes and bad music synching and reproduction, you can see his foot catch in the GW2 segment and they miss some steps to disentangle. Plus the twizzles were kind of weak. The flip into standing on his foot and holding a pose afterward for the lift is quite pretty, difficult, and very understated. I'm not crazy about the midline step. I'm presuming the Rain In Spain part is supposed to be quickstep/foxtrot-the steps are too generic to tell, I'm guessing quickstep because of the little jump, but the music is not quicksteppy enough for me.

Bobrova/Soloviev and Hoffman/Zavozin are not up yet.

Had similar problem watching CoC on IN - lots of freezes and could not hear the music. Re P&B - glad they rid themselves of Amelie as some of us discussed before it just doesn't work with the GW. This program is much better F&S - don't know why dancers never understand that you cannot wear long dresses especially that trail longer in the back - just begs for partner to catch edge. Trying to channel that Audrey Hepburn dress might be suitable design for Ascot but not ice dancing. Too bad for Hubbells - he looked particularly distraught - rightly so as they were slow as well. Not good for their hopes of making the US World Team with the Shibs and C&Z looking better.
