ETA: I remember Olga Korbut charming the world with her routines. Here is her floor exercise:

She was the first to really get me interested in gymnastics.
Maybe seniorita or some others will add a few clips of favorite performances over the years.

Oh, wonderful!! I'd never really seen Olga Korbut's gymnastics. That made me remember something. I remember at my ballet school we all were rivetted by the gymnastic competition in 1992. And one of my ballet teachers talked about how it would drive her bananas that the gymnasts stopped in the middle of their floor routines to take a deep breath before the tumbling passes. And she said she felt that woudl be corrected in years to come. Well, it hasn't of course. But I noticed that Olga Korbut didn't do that in her routine. I wonder if all this stopping was made necessary because the tumbling passes became more difficult?

I had to look the terminology in english:laugh:, but yes it is breathing point, concetration point and creates a bit of anticipation for judges. Basically is a point to take off anxiety and doubt. I liked the Korbut's routine but she was light and fast, in some other athletes it might look like they are chased.

Oh my. You know, I don't know if there has ever been a skater with as much attitude as Boginskaya. She sizzled. She was unique.
yes she was, if I have to have a childhood idol, she is the one for me :)

Keep it up and you will be "barred" from this thread Ms smarty pants ;)
Let's have a bit more "balance" in your comments, and not the same old familiar "ring."

If not posters here will be forced to "pommel" you to the "floor." And we can all use the "exercise" and won't hesitate to "meet" you on the "mats" for a little wrestling lesson :p

Here is the "trickster" Amy Chow talking about the USA team from 2000 receiving the Team Bronze ten years later. Bela was right - and probably right about 2008. China is using 6 year olds at the Olympics.

Still, if they are that young and can win - why not let them have it

And she deserved to get the gold back...:disapp:

I agree with you and felt so bad for Andreea. I thought she was great and it was really bad and unfair when they took her Gold away. I hope someday she gets it back but even if she did it wouldn't be the same.

There is something I always loved about the Romanian girls!

A clip from 2000 about Andreea this unfortunate decision:

actually I think Raducan had appealed to CaS and now they got the decision(Yay 10 years later!!!) which was in favor of her and called her innocent but they didn t give her medal back.:disapp:

Didn't the Romanian government give Andreea a special medal....ala Plushy's medal presented to him by his fans? :)

It seems strange, practically worthless to declare her innocent and not award her with a Gold medal. :scowl:

Amanar had said she would accept the gold only to give it to Raducan and maybe she did it, but officially Raducan has not be aknowledged as the AA gold medalist of 2000, not even after the decision of court. So they stripped her of her medal, needed 10 years to say she was not guilty of the medication(doctor of the team was accused) and they dont make up for it. Yeah, ISU seems paradise union now..;)

Since the ongoing world gymnastics championships is causing me to watch gymnastics on youtube again, I thought I'd revive this thread with a look back at these two incredible gymnasts from 1996.

While the Americans were nailing their floor routines in Atlanta to huge cheers, the Russian girls were falling apart on the beam.
Then the sublime Svetlana Khorkina goes and nails her beam routine - completely un-phased by the uproar that Dominique Dawes was causing by nailing one of the best floor routines in the competition at the exactly the same time.

Here, at the end of this clip, you can see Svetlana in the background while Dawes does her floor routine.

And in this one, there's a replay of Svetlana, looking supremely unruffled by the cheering around her for a competitor. I just love her bar routine.
