Yay for B&A and good for C&S!!!!!! And congrats to N/K who set a new WR in the FD and overall! It might be a while before they post final combined standings, but it should be 1. N/K, 2. B/A, and 3. C&S.

Hooray! Belbin and Agoston are in the GPF! Has an American team ever made the GPF in dance???? I don't remember any making it. Certainly never as anything but the number 6 team. This is great!! And its nice to see that the scores reflect that Winkler and Lohse have great skating skills and great CD.

Also both C&S and W&L got a costume and prop deduction.

If you look at the detailed scores, you can see that B&A skated well except for one step sequence. C&S skated well but got dinged for GOE across the board and then got dinged again on skating skills. And B&A's score is higher than:
1. Theirs at SA and TL
2. Dub&Lau at both SC and TL
3. DelSchoes at SA and TL

It's unclear if this means anything yet, but it's a good sign for B&A.

N&K got the highest total score ever, if this means anything.

While I am not crazy about COP, I think that in dance, it's an improvement. Placements change. Couples strength become clear and mean something. It's got to be more encouraging for the teams themselves, too. I often wondered how they could know what to do to score better, when the scores did not seem to respond to anything in their control under the old system.

Punsalab/Swallow made it in '98, but they were definately team #6.

I'm so happy that Galit and Sergei made the podium! :D I was afraid they were in some big trouble there! But thats also too bad for Kati and Rene though :( Hopefully W/L will do wel, in their home country come worlds. And WOW look at Navka and Kostomarov's scores. That's huge. They must have added some more difficulty since SC, to get big scores like that!

Props are forbidden, and both teams are experienced and know that. So I would assume that they got a costume deduction. Why they got a costume deduction, I don't know. I haven't seen either program yet, and in the case of W&L I haven't even seen a picture of it. There is language on the ISU site that tells what a bad costume is. Two rules I know:
1. No pants for girls
2. No bare midriffs for girls
The other rules, AFAIR, are fuzzier and related to not looking like show costumes.

C&S did not get a costume/prop deduction at Skate Canada, so I presume that this means the ref at COR was more rule bound than the ref at SC. And that the costumes in question are not clearly over the line, but in that fuzzy region of subjectivity.

Joe, I know what you mean. But how would we sustain the summer months if there weren't god awful costume threads?

I was curious to see what the Ice Dance placings were needed at NHK for C&S or WinLoh to make the GPF. Here's what I came up with: I am not sure I have all the tiebreakers right.

Standings as of now:

These are a lock:
N&K 24
DenStav 22 (are at NHK)
B&A 22 (In 3rd to Den Stav on 4th tie breaker)

These could still be beaten, although not likely for DubLau
DubLau 16
DelSch 14

Still in play at NHK:
GrushGon 9+NHK need 4th. This gives 14 pts, but tiebreaker is highest finish; theirs was 2nd, Delschoes was 3rd.
WinLoh 5+NHK need 2nd. This gives 14 pts, but tiebreaker is highest finish; if theirs is 2nd, Delschoes was3rd
C&S 5+NHK need 2nd. This gives 14 pts, but tiebreaker is highest finish; if theirs is 2nd, Delschoes was 3rd

I think the GrushGons will probalby make it, but it is not out of the question for C&S or Winkler and Lohse, but they HAVE to either both beat the GrushGons and/or have some other help, resulting in bumping Grush Gon and Delschoes.

It's not impossible!
If C&S or WLoh 2nd 14 pts Beat del Schoes on top 2, beat GrushGon on head to head scoring
Whomever in 3rd
G&G 4th 14 pts beat Del Schoes on top 2 first tie breaker

Pretty exciting!

N/K have 24 points, D/S and B/A 21, Du/Lau 16, and DelShoes 14.

At NHK, I don't see Gold going to anyone but D/S (their non-scoring event). G/G got 9 points at each of their previous events and I don't see them losing to C/S. That would give G/G 18 points and a GPF berth. C/S got only 5 points for Skate Canada, and the 7 CoR points were their non-scoring event, so if they win bronze they won't make the final. W/L got 5 points for CoR and if THEY win bronze, they don't make the final, either. I think DelShoes is in.

Yes, I think you are right and NHK will finish 1 DenStav 2 GrushGon. I was just curious to see whether C&S and W&L Ger had a chance...and they do. However, it is not impossible for C&S to beat them. And if DenStav withdraw, then it is a whole nother deal.

Chait/Sak got a costume deduction because a piece of her costume came off during the FD.

I don't know the cause of W/L's deduction, though.

Doesn't seem very fair to penalize a team for an accident like this...

If it was one of the hanging balls from the clown costume, I think that counts as "you should have known better." I'd expect the same thing to happen if there were sparkles or decoration that wasn't attached properly. I don't think it would have been called if someone caught a skate in a skirt or shirt sleeve and a piece came off.

Belbin and Agosto would have been murdered last year with their OD dress that shed feathers all over the ice.

I believe that the reason W&L were penalized was another shedding costume problem. Since both teams that were close to each other had the same problem, it was an ideal situation to impose the penalty and make the point to other teams.

Spare bits of costume on the ice are a risk to the health of those that skate after the shedding team. I'm glad they got penalized, especially since it was in a situation that didn't affect final placing since both teams were equally penalized.

Hooray for COP on this one. Here's the picture of the W/L costumes. Looking at the hanging bits, I can definitely see how they would have come off.

Well, besides any dangerous hanging peices, I really like her dress. It looks very pretty on her. I won't comment on his costume. :)
