The Shibutanis had difficulty; he tripped, and part of her dress went dangling. If C&L had any such trouble, it must have been while my stream was frozen; I think it more likely one of their sequences was given a low level.

Warmup has started. There is an I&K banner! There are also a lot of those NHK thingies that look like carnivorous cell phones.

There are Japanese, American, and Canadian judges.

Skaters were introduced as in an ice show.

Dora TUROCZI / Balazs MAJOR HUN (ISU World Ranking: Fifty Eigth)
    Coach: Ilona Berecz
    Choreographer: Galit Chait
Their program: Waltz: The Royal Waltz; Quickstep: Sing, Sing, Sing
    Current Junior champions of Hungary
12th at last year's Junior World Championships

The same costumes as in practice
Very ruffly two tone blue skirt and huge big sequins on the bodice. Spaghetti straps and ultramarine gloves. He in white shirt and gray vest and pants.
They both seem to have colds, blowing their noses and coughing.

Rotational lift. Very slow speed into it.
GW. Her Shoot the duck is very low (good). His lunge didn't lunge (not so good) GW over.
He messed up the first twizzle and they got out of sync. Recovered on the 2nd twizzle
This Sing Sing Sing isn't singing. They are way too slow for this music.
    TES 15.81
    PCS 16.87
    TOTAL 32.68

Xiaoyang YU / Chen WANG CHN (ISU World Ranking: Thirty Sixth)
    Coach: Hongyan Xi
    Choreographer: Natalia Linichuk
Their program: Waltz: The Blue Danube by Johann Strauss

She's in a kind of matte peach with heavy silver and gray fake sash swirling around the top. He's pseudo something or other. Maybe a gaucho? There's an odd big buttoned cummerbund and a deep vee neck top -sort of Tyrolean beer server meets gaucho with a country music over embroidered yoke on the shirt.

A few Little toe steps to start. GW a little beter than last team. faster.
    GW over
twizzles arms up 2nd and 3rd set. Not great synchro.
simple rotational lift into a tiny spin
The rest of this is not Strauss and music is heavy and abrupt tango. Slow footwork.

    TES 22.85
    PCS 20.65
    TOTAL 43.50
    Into first

Penny COOMES / Nicholas BUCKLAND GBR (ISU World Ranking: Thirtieth)
    Coach: Evgeni Platov, Philip Askew
    Choreographer: Philip Askew
Their program: Waltz: La Valse d'Amelie by Yann Tiersen; Tango: Tango de los Exilados by Vanessa Mae and Walter Taieb

He's in a bright red shirt with a striped tango suit over it with a large red fake flower on the chest.. She has a tango dress mostly wide fishnet looking on top. Rather too minimal for ballroom.

    Amelie. Rotational lift. Nothing special.
    Golden Waltz. Leglines don't match.
    Pretty good edges.
    Nice shoot the duck
    Bumpy attitude turn
    Little dance move into tango
    It's still abrupt transition, though.
twizzles. He put his foot down between the 2 sets.
Straight line footwork quite far apart
Little hops in it. Got a bit close to the boards at the end. They seemed to be improvising. The moves into the final pose quite interesting and nice.
Final pose shown in practice photos.
    In the KnC with Zhulin
    TES 22.36
    PCS 21.16
    TOTAL 43.56
    Into first place

Cathy REED / Chris REED JPN (ISU World Ranking: Twenty Ninth)
    Coach: Nikolai Morozov, Walter Rizzo
    Choreographer: Nikolai Morozov, Patti Wilcox
Their program: A Party For Me? (from Addams Family soundtrack) by Marc Shaiman; The Tango (from Addams Family soundtrack) by Marc Shaiman

She in an obvious Morticia outfit.with spidetly stuff on the illusion
He has an odd white spot on his shoulder on the back (a white hand (Thing), I think), striped pants. bowtie Also a moustache.

Kissing her arm a la Gomez
    Kneeslide lift
    Waltz
    Shoot the duck good
    Layback was good
I think this is better than previous couples
Crossing twizzles. This is not working and he stumbles (possible deduction)
straight line footwork going quite well.
    Love the way it ends
Now final lift and flourish to pose.
Coach says Next time you'll do better
    TES 21.86
    PCS 23.04
    Total 44.90

Elena ILINYKH / Nikita KATSALAPOV RUS (ISU World Ranking: Twenty Seventh)
    Coach: Alexander Zhulin, Oleg Volkov
    Choreographer: Liudmila Vlasova
Their program: Waltz: Waltz from "Agony" (soundtrack) by Alfred Schnittke; Tango

Whether they were fit or not in the summer. They look great now. She's in kind of a black tango bikini with a black grass short hula skirt and a huge red flower. He's in a white shirt under black suit

    Grating noise
    Wrapping and upwrapping leg
Twizzles the one foot kind, a little wild, but good.
    Good speed here
Into the GW to music that doesn't work for it
    STD OK
Rather slow and careful in the 2nd segment
    Flippy lift around his neck
    into tango
    screen froze RATS
Signed on again and they're done.
I'm sure it will go into first, but I can't stand the music.
There was a little stumble by Nikita in the straight line footwork from the replay (part when I was having a screen freeze.

    TES 29.79
    PCS 27.10
    TOTAL 56.89

A nice debut for them, but I would rather never hear that music again.

They did not have a fall. Anna may have lost a level on her twizzle b/c her foot appeared to come down early. Their edges in the golden waltz section did not appear to be terribly deep and they weren't as down in their knees throughout the dance as the teams ahead of them.

So many tangos. Why the sudden tango fad?

The tango was one of the choices allowed for the SD to combine with the Golden Waltz. IMO, it was a bad choice. The two rhythms don't transition well into each other, IMO.

You could do all waltz, or waltz plus your choice of foxtrot, quickstep, or tango. In the folk OD last year, tango was specifically prohibited. Perhaps the coaches had a bunch of tango programs saved up

What? No I&K video! I hoped one would exist, since I missed half their program due to a screen freeze.

I'm not sure this site will work for the outside of Japan, but NHK has uploaded the clips of SD.

Worth noting that D/W scored that with a level one somewhere. Weaver/Poje had all threes and fours. I/K had one level two as did the Shibs. Cappellini/Lanotte had two level twos.
