It's not my culture but my understanding is that traditionally it was a formal coming out event for young ladies in the South, usually at sweet sixteen, wherein they were introduced to potential beaus. These days it's often a charity event such as this one Rachael participated in.what is a debutant ball? like a dance?
I see it as a chance for young women and young men to dress up and learn formal manners.
I think this one decreed white dresses and the men in black and white. Otherwise I thought Patrick could have worn his very dashing new LP costume!But then he wouldn't be able to take off that jacket with the attached vest!

Patrick's not that short.......I figure him to be about 5'8".....judging by how he looked when I was standing next to him this year........at the least 5'7".
Was he in his skates when you stood next to him?
He is listed as 5'7", a common skater height, definitely not one of the shortest ones. Shawn Swayer is the little one in Canada. In these pictures he was shot at a distance with a very tall man in the foreground or right behind him. He doesn't seem quite as short compared to most around him. And I bet Rachael had on heels at least 3 in. high!

My SIL is from the Philippines and she says that she'd like to have a debut party for my nieces. They can cost as much as a wedding to put on - in fact, the girl has her closest friends - male and female - as attendants, an escort, flower girl and ring bearer, etc. Even dance lessons are involved. Personally, while it would be fun to attend, I'm not looking forward to hearing my mother comment that the money would be better spent on their college educations (which I also agree about.)

Rachael is so pretty. She looks a lot like her Dad. (Those are two separate sentences. Mr. Flatt is not as pretty as Rachael. Debonair, yes.
The young man dancing with Rachael in the last picture is, however, the same person she is dancing with in picture #2 of the first post, yes? Maybe he is Rachael's actual boyfriend in real life. (But he's not Adam Rippon, right?)
By the way, to continue our discussion of white or tan boots, were Rachael's shoes white? It is long after Labor Day! (I assume she was not wearing her stockings over her shoes.)
