Why are you all so angry? The great dread that the quad would be forgotten because of Lysacek's win didn't happen. The value of the quad was raised, just like all the quaddies wanted. What's to get mad about?

Some U.S. organization decided to give Lysacek an award. I dare say some Russian organization gave Plushenko an award. No doubt some Canadian organization will give Chan an award at some point this year. So what?

Tunnel vision. Chan put up an amazing performance with two quads and people still criticize him. Quad or no quad, expression or lack of expression, all that crap are just excuses to legitimate a subjective dislike for a skater/result. Not a big deal.

LOL. Exactly. I didn't bother to wade in this thread for lack of interest. Really, it's about a skater I don't care about getting an award within his own country, so very none of my business. Then I got in here during a lull and as usual, I just didn't like a young hard working and accomplished person getting unreasonably and meanly assailed so I started defending him! Generally Patrick gets the most unfair bashing so I tend to speak up most for him. But in the short time I've been on this board, I've also staunchly defended Mao and Rachael. As I've stated before, though I have my favorites, I admire and respect all elite skaters for all that they have and they do to get where they are and be so accomplished so young that I feel they don't deserve the kind of scorn and disrespect they get sometimes.

Never thoght I would be taking up the cause for Lysacek though. :p Probably a little compulsive for fairness on my part.

Seniorita, if somebody like to congratulate him, of course, there will be somebody like to talk about it. What do you expect?;)

Yeah, it's US who gave their own athletes an award. I can see that. But there is no such thread that's talking about Plushenko's any award from Russian Federation. If there were, I bet it would be filled a lot more nastier comments than this.:rolleye:

I don't think so. It is the moral outrage on the part of a few posters that seem weird.

I think if the Russian Olympic Committee chose Plushenko as their athlete of the year -- sure, maybe a couple of Russian posters might say, oh I think the bobsledder was more deserving. But I don't think anyone would gnash their teeth and tear their hair out.

Do you mean Plushenko or Lysacek?

It would be totally cool if Plushenko, with three Olympic medals and multiple world championships, won the Athlete of the Decade award. Take that, Tiger Woods!

That would go along with Michelle Kwan's Athelete of the Decade award for 1995-2004. Skating rules!

I'm not mad if your comment's including me. But like I said, it does bring back the memories. It's like Lysacek fans flash his medal and glory in your face. Why couldn't people who are not so keen about this talk about it?

Right, I'm so grateful that Lysacek did that forgetable and, in the meantime, unforgetable quadless Olympic winning skate, so that there could be the subsequent change. And here we are, the glorious quad era is back.

What is that... the music of Patrick Chan's "Don't Worry! Be happy!" ...I think I'd better leave here and go there. Bye!

He defeated reigning Olympic champion Evgeni Plushenko of Russia to end Russia's dominance of the top of the podium.
which means he wouldn't get the award if he had beaten Taka or Chan. Who said the Cold War is over?

Bravo! That's a good way for a fan of skating to talk. Like you, I've defended skaters I'm not the biggest fan of, mainly for those reasons. I think it's discourteous to blame a skater for how scores turn out. They all work hard--harder than most of us could imagine--and they skate when sick, when injured, when their plane was late and they had no practice time. None of them wants to "pollute" skating or bring it down, and all of them have the right to try to win. Besides, many of them are kids, and most of us are adults. I think we have an unfair advantage that we should not make use of and should not berate them. I think sportsmanship should apply to fans, also.

As for interrupting the progress of skating, progress is an uneven thing. I don't think, for example, that Katarina Witt was any great pathfinder in terms of skating skills. Should she have stood aside so Elaine Zayak could win the Olympics instead? And what about Kristi beating Midori? Skating is an organic form that advances but not in a steady stream. It's also a sport, and on any given day, someone surprising will win. The Olympics is not a coronation.

He did beat Taka and Chan. That's what the Gold medalist does. They beat everyone.

Oh, please don't predend that you didn't get my point. I said if he beated someone but NOT PLUSH (if he, for instance, Plush wasn't in V-2010), the factor "to end Russia's dominance" wouldn't take place, as well as the Lys's award together with it.

Actually i agreed on that, the pulling hair comment was because people dont say just Congrats Evan and bring back the Olys, I hope it was clear and I was not lost in translation again!

LOL, Ah well until then Plushy got in Russia second place against Olga Kaniskina for the athlete of 2009, Isibayeva third, people voting , The Best Athlete of Russia 2010, rusian People' choices award: in the fiinal round he was against Arshavin, Best Athlete of St Petersburg, Medal The Order "Service to the Fatherland" First degree (from Medvedev), Another Military order of honor something
Won the RFederation Prize for Overcome Challenge (together with Shabalin, all people voted, more than 10000 votes each:biggrin:)
Russian Forbes named him the 8th most famous and rich person for 2010 (who are the other 7?) and the strangest I read on his site
Prince of Monaco put him in his Team for Children (and maybe gave him casino marks? lol)
But the most beautiful, people''s gold medal (made from their melted jewelry, platina was expensive probably)
not as important as Evans i guess, but it is cool anyway.:)

I think it's tremendously cool, and just as important as Evan's award. Plushy is definitely one of the athletes of the decade, as Mathman says--in the world, not just in Russia. The melted-down "people's medal" is a lovely gesture. Remember when the people of Canada made one for Kurt Browning, in the shape of a maple leaf? If you mean enough to your country for folks from all over it to send in their jewelry, that's pretty impressive.

Edit: I wasn't sure whether you were saying that the strangest achievement was the Prince of Monaco putting Plushy on the Team for Children, or whether the "strangest" comment referred to the 8th richest Russian. If you meant the Monaco honor, that's not so strange. Isn't Prince Albert very active in the Olympic movement? He competed in bobsled for his country in several Olympics, and I think he's the current head of his country's Olympic delegation. The two men may already have struck up a friendship at one of the Olympic villages, and Prince Albert may have asked Plushy to participate in order to raise his organization's visibility.

It could be the USOC was just thinking of beating RUssia as they have were celebrating US Hockey beating the Soviet at the 1980 Olympics all through 2010. DId speed skating change like figure skating becasue of Shani Davis gold? Did skiing change its rules because of Bode's wins. Did Snowbaording change its rules after Shaun White's win? There were so many great athletes who could have and they choose someone even though their win caused rule changes to prevent someone like him from winning again?!?!? It must be all about the Russia because it is pathetic that Davis, White, Miller - even Tyson Gay who was doing great all year all lose to someone like extreme backlash causing Lysacek.
