I wonder what will happen now to the NHK trophy. There is the possibility that the recent earthquake could trigger an eruption of Mt Fuji, which would close Narita, and other Japanese airports for quite some time. The ash cloud such an eruption would generate would cause total chaos in the Japanese air traffic system.

The 1707 Hoei earthquake, magnitude 8.6, is believed to have triggered an eruption of Fuji a few months later. Whether or not the recent earthquake will trigger an eruption is uncertain. Earthquakes in 1924 (magnitude 8.4) and 1932 (Magnitude 8.6) did not trigger an eruption, but the mountain is considered overdue for an eruption.

What happens if such an eruption cuases cancellation of NHK trophy? Does the ISU just go with the other 5 events, and determine the GP final from that, or would try and find another event somewhere to replace NHK?

It's far more likely that the situation at Fukushima I will worsen to full on meltdown. Now I am mildly optimistic that a large scale radioactive release won't occur, but even if the situation is contained many countries will issue travel advisories on going anywhere in Japan for months (basically to wait and make sure no leaks occur), and many skating federations will follow suit and forego sending skaters there. I think it's entirely possible NHK Trophy in November won't go ahead, or it does and it becomes a bit of a controversy over whether skaters are pressured to go into a potentially dangerous area. Maybe an equivalent GP event can be created ahead of time to replace it in another country. Keep an eye out on Fukushima.

Please, no, even the Vulcan now ...WTH.
Things are bad enough to picture Fuji erupting and messing up Narita :L

Skaters have to go to Cup of China all the time, where the air is nearly toxic.

lol Absolutely true, and far more detrimental to health than Japan is likely to be. But with radiation and potential danger people and governments aren't always rational. The possibility of a mass scale radiation leak is enough for countries and skaters to keep away.

If foreign federations are concerned about their skaters' safety, NHK trophy could be held at Osaka, Japan, which is more than 500 miles away from the Fukushima nuclear plants. Better yet, it can be held in a city in the Kyushu island (where Amodio was practicing till he went back to France), which is more than 1000 miles away from the nuclear plants. Safety concern can be addressed that way. It has an added bonus of exposing the first rate figure skating event to Japanese fans who cannot originarily travel to Tokyo.

However, I do concede that the Japanese government had better put a concerted effort to address safety concerns for the GP event to occur in Japan this fall.

That is true even now. But still quite a few countries have issued blanket travel advisories for all of Japan and is facilitating the evacuations of all its citizens from Japan regardless of where they are. They will get less paranoid as the months drag on and the situation in Fukushima stabilizes. It's possible they will get over it by the time November rolls around. Oh well, we'll have to see!

If the scenario you mention ever comes true, no one is the world could care less about the NHK Trophy. What is at stake would be the lives of thousands more of Japanese people, possible social unrest of a major scale, effect on not only Japanese but also the world economy, effect on the world climate caused by major volcanic eruption, etc.

Germany could possibly step in for the Grand Prix 2011-2012 there has been talk of it, so Nations Cup could be back for a that season, give Japan a chance to recover.
