Last Samurai

Just saw Last Sumerai this weekend. Thanks to the snows, the room wasn't crowded, at all. Of the top ten films, I've only seen Seabiscuit and Samurai and would rate the latter as the better of the 2. It wasn't exactly what I expected, but I did find myself shedding tears during Samurai. My cousin Mike claimed that his teariness was due to his cold.

I really wish more comedic films were recognized. A movie doesn't have to be an epic, sweeping drama to be good. This must be why I like the Golden Globes. They deign to recognize more of these films.

I'm really surprised that the New York Critics chose Lord of the Rings: Return of the King as the Best Picture of the year considering how they usually try to be different and pick movies with less hype surrounding them. Good for Peter Jackson and co.

I'm also surprised that Finding Nemo didn't win Best Animated feature either. This list looks pretty different from the National Board of Review.

VIETgrlTerifa,
Keep this up and I'm going to have to propose! Seriously, thanks for the great lists. I couldn't get the Independent Spirit list, the page came up as "error." So many categories and interesting choices to comment on. Am going to have to take some time to digest all of this. Natl Board of Review, as I'm sure you know, tends to be more mainstream, whereas groups like iFC and NY Film Critics tend to be more "out there." But even for Natl Board, naming Ed Zwick Best Director for "Last Samurai." Hmm. I guess big epic get 'em every time. On my first peruse of the lists, so far my favorite choices are:
Best Supporting Actor
Alec Baldwin, The Cooler

Best Supporting Actress
Patricia Clarkson, Pieces of April and The Station Agent

Have thought Clarkson to be brilliant ever since "High Art" and am glad to see Alec Baldwin taking roles like the one in "The Cooler" and am glad to see that movie recognized at all (I loved it).

Now off to read "Award Shows and Why We Love and Hate Them."

Thanks again, VGT, and don't worry, I suck at stalking, lol.

lol, Rgirl...go ahead and stalk, it makes me feel like a celebrity.

I fixed the link for the IFP spirit Awards, so it should work now. I haven't seen the Cooler yet, but I heard you get to see William H. Macy's butt, something I thought we'd never see.

I agree with you about how the critic choices go, the National Board seems to be the most mainstream, and the Los Angeles group (which cancelled their awards this year) are more moderate whearas New York and the National Society and the IFP can get out there.

That's why I'm more surprised about Lord of the Rings getting the big one from the New York critics than I am about Finding Nemo losing to a more obscure and foreign animated film.

The Finding Nemo loss reminds me of when I read that in 1995, "Sense and Sensibility" was winning all the screenplay awards from the critics groups and the National Society (who vote weeks later than the other groups) chose the other Jane Austen adaptation of that year as the best screenplay, which was "Clueless".

VIETgirlTerifa,
Thanks for fixing the ISA link. No real surprises here, but sounds like they chose some great flicks. I printed them here, if that's okay. I find it easier to compare what the different groups chose whenthey're all on one thread.

BTW, you can be our GS Film Celebrity whether I try to stalk you or not. You know the scoop!

Re Bill Macy's butt in "The Cooler," I heard Roger Ebert say that he was talking to Macy at the Toronto Film Festival. Macy said the original version of the film showed him in the altogether, which he was really psyched about. He got a trainter, worked out, the whole bit. But then the MPAA was going to give it an NC-17 rating instead of an R so they cut out a lot of Bill's best "parts." Macy told Ebert he was so POd, saying, "I never in my life thought I'd get a nude scene and I finally get one, work my butt off to look good, and they cut it out because of the damn MPAA." Ebert had seen the original and was ticked off too. He said, "They just showed two people who loved each other having sex the way real people have sex. Why does that deserve an NC-17?" I wonder what the MPAA would have done with "Don't Look Now," which has perhaps the greatest love/sex scene in film history in it. Anyway, poor Bill.

Count me as another person who is really annoyed that great comedies (the FEW there are) get ignored....

Oh yeah...and FINALLY, someone giving Johnny Depp a Golden Globe nomination! He WAS the "Pirates of the Caribbean"...he MADE that movie. (Of course, I think the only other GG nom he got was for Ed Wood, and he lost, right? Or was it Landau who won that one, and he wasn't even nominated? What an overlooked talent Depp has been)

I only saw Lost in Translation and Pirates. I'm sure Sean Penn is excellent in Mystic but Murray is something special in Lost. and, of course, Johny Depp can do not wrong. I'm just not going to get worked up over the Ocar winner. there's too many 'bests'.

BTW, the newcomer, Scarllet Johanson - Wow and she's still a kid.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I was disappointed by the whole film. I haven't read the book, but it was made in a typical Hollywood movie, IMO. And the actors were equally schematic and predictable. Sean Penn is a great actor, and I think he should've have gotten an Oscar for his role in "Dead Man Walking", and probably quite a few of his other films. But he's been playing the same role lately, no matter which film he's in. If there was any depth to his role in MR, it's was fake.

Same goes for Laura Linney (I couldn't believe it how shallow, and unbelievable her role was; I loved Linney in "Primal Fear" and "Congo", btw), Tim Robbins (totally miscast), and in part, Marcia Gay Harden. The only person who I thought was quite good was Kevin Bacon.

A bad script; a shallow and predictable story, and underwritten characters + a humongous amount of overacting = a bad film in my book.

I haven't seen that many movies this year but I was so touched by Lost in Translation. What a beautiful, subtle movie. The relationship between Murray and Johansen was lovely. Hope it gets Best Picture. It probably won't though. Unfortuanately Lord of the Rings will probably win.
