Shawn Sawyer named in Canada's national team

Patrick Chan among leaders of Canada's figure skating team

Leading the way for the men is newly crowned world champion Patrick Chan, 20, of Toronto. He is joined by Shawn Sawyer of Edmundston, N.B.; Joey Russell of Labrador City, N.L.; Kevin Reynolds of Coquitlam, B.C.; and Elladj Balde of Pierrefonds, Que.
I know Patrick is the headliner, but Shawn's staying is more newsworthy.

Well, he only announced that he would go on shows with CSOI instead of going to Worlds. He never said he was retiring. It was an assumption because he was considering it the year before.

Shawn announced he was retiring from competition: http://www.cbc.ca/sports/blogs/pjkwo...r-skating.html

Either he changed his mind again, or they named the teams without consulting him.

USFSA names the team in much the same manner, then they go about fixing things later, but those are team envelopes, so maybe I'm wrong and this is different?

My guess is he is named to the team based on results this year, regardless of his plans for next year. I think Skate Canada will replace him if the retirement is official.

My take on this is the following, Shawn has not made an official announcement to Skate Canada. This is an entry in PJ Kwong's blog only, it is not an official retirement statement.

That is why he has been added to the envelope.
