The tech panel must be from three different countries, not four.
BTW, Thornhill may still hold the lower level competitions, but Junior and lower don't count for international points, and perhaps Skate Canada didn't want too many outside competitors in the lower ranks (especially the Ladies!).
KKonas ...Aha..that was my next question..or part of it was. I wasn't sure of the numbers.
I imagined with all of the skaters from different countries training ( if only part time) in NA , that we wouldn't have much trouble attracting enough skaters ( or am I wrong in this ?)..but I didn't know what was required on the tech / judging end of things.
And yes , how does the 3 person tech panel thing shake out ? or is that 4 counting the referee ?
I wonder if Skate Canada is working to have dance included next year ?..
Oops! chuckm.. I got caught in the crosspost....but the ISU does list the Jr. and Novice levels... for all 3 disciplines.

Yes, I am including the referee as part of the tech panel. So if the Ref is from the US, the 2 Tech Specialists and the controller must all be from different countries from the referee and from each other.Originally Posted by colleen o'neill

As for the 3 slots for seeded skaters, and the reducing of the slots from 12 to 10 (singles), about 100 minutes ago a Japanese media said they confirmed the ISU and that these are indeed planned to be so.

It also says ISU pays $10,000 for participating in his/her 3rd GP.

That's a hefty amount for skater(s) to refuse the offer.
I can only see Pairs as having a vacant slot for competition. Maybe there will be others. Quien sabe?
I dunno, it seems like a good opportunity/reward for the top skaters to consider.
The GP needs to decide if it wants to be a real competition or a training exercise for less experienced/competitive skaters.
A competition where the top two or three skaters are so superior to the rest of the field hardly seems like a very competitive/interesting event.
I think those who are so upset by this rule change should be lobbying for more "B" events so the younger skaters and veterans still hanging on have a place to compete in a more level field.
Do we want a real "Grand Prix" or just a "grand pageant" event

If the main purpose is to have only top skaters, then why not restrict the Grand Prix to the top 12 at Worlds, with a few extra spots going to top Seasons Best scorers? Of course, the big drawback to this approach is that with injuries and illnesses, there will be lots of withdrawals which will have to be filled in with 'inferior' skaters.
If your idea of sport is a skater scoring 100 points higher than other skaters at the same event then skating and the grand prix is just right for you.
Personally I hope for something a little more competitive and sporting.
But the GP series works well as a pageant type event. But it is not successful enough.
Better for Speedy to try some changes before the whole thing is cancelled due to a lack of interest.
Hernando, Alissa Czisny scored 100 points more than a skater (Tatyana Khazova) at US Nationals. It also happened in dance. Do you feel that Nationals would benefit from restricting the skaters who went based on a similar criterium? If not, what do you feel the difference is?
ETA: I went and checked this last season, and I couldn't find a single example of a senior GP event where the top skater was 100 points higher than the last placed skater. Do you have an example in mind?

Just watching the first group of skaters and then the second group at almost any GP seems like night and day.
Natls are so different from the GP I won't bother to go into details as the answer is obvious.

Yup, even when Mao messed up a few jumps.
Her skating is so much more polished and refined than most of the other skaters one would have to be blind not to notice it. Or perhaps a CoP judge
My point is that she skated in the earlier group.
