From my understanding, Shanghai is too far south to connect to skating. The big stars this time are Yao Ming and SJP for sure, whereas earlier it was Lang Lang when parents brought their music student kids and the event was billed as Lang Lang And His Champion Friends. Skating and skaters were not even mentioned.
Most Chinese skaters are from Harbin, for which Shen and Zhao have expressed much love and gratitude, especially for the elders. From what I've read, I'm most impressed and touched by Shen and Zhao's love of skating and their sincere goal and determination to promote and popularize figure skating in China, as a pay back for the support they received in their trail brazing career. They take their role model status seriously and take effort to help the young skaters, knowing what are important from their own early experiences. They ambitiously hope for figure skating to become a popular sport in China like pingpong and badminton.
Meanwhile the public is more interested in their baby making project.
I just love Shen and Zhao more every year, both on the ice and off. They seem to be honorable people as well as inspired skaters. Their combination of fine traits helped them become world treasures during their career--like Gordeyeva/Grinkov and Torvill/Dean--skaters whose popularity transcends national interests. When they competed in the recent Olympics, I know I was rooting ardently for them, and I'm willing to bet that many other fans from different countries were also hoping for S/Z to win.
Their Turandot program in 2003 (I think) still gives me goosebumps.

Well, it's good that Yao Ming came out to see this show. Maybe that'll make the public notice figure skating more.
shine, and others who are interested, you can paste "2011冰上雅姿" onto a video search and pick from what show up.
And of course just Artistry On Ice and/or your favourite skater's name. Most videos are uploaded onto Chinese sites like Youku first and soon enough on Youtube but they will all show up in an English search as long as there are the English search words in the videos title or description.

LuCN, I just saw this Weir interview, he said the audience in China knows what they are watching - jumps, spins, etc, which is quite different from your observation. What do you think about this?

^^^^ I linked that in the JW's Chinese Interview thread.
Audiences that cheer him are knowledgeable fans. Those who don't are ignorant. His Bad Romance video is labeled as "Johnny's Poker Face, Too Adorable".

Patrick Chan's Moondance has been viewed so far more than 1500 times on Youtube while Bad Romance has been viewed fewer than 500 times though uploaded a day earlier. Evidently international fans are clueless.
I have nothing to do with Patrick's number. I block cookies.
Waiting for higher quality videos after TV broadcast of the Shanghai show.

What an embarrassment! Someone should tell the uploader of the clip his/her mistake.
According to Weir, he is a big star in China because Chinese fans really know skating. (View his interview video.) The truth is his Chinese fans are mostly clueless about skating but find his Lady Gaga schtick and persona entertaining.
I was snarking with my observation that Chan's YT video is 3 times more popular than Weir's, reflecting the preferences of international skating fans, probably due to their cluelessness about Weir's superior skating.
View the two performances yourself for a knowledgeability test.
eta. I am so ignorant that I am sure the skaing skills he displays in the Bad Romance video would not get him on the podium of US Junior Nationals.

I find Johnny's bad romance hard to watch. I'm astonished at how fast Johnny's skating skills are falling. That semi-transparent body suit with diaper!![]()
fscric,Johnny is always very kind to his fans and audience.so what ever they did,he praises them and makes them happy,it's kind of "white lies".If you went to see the shows, you'll know who tell the trueth.
and about the name of the video,it's a sad thing, but many people here just see him as "Lady gaga on Ice" and just know "Poker face",they don't know the differents. It's waste time to ask common people change their mind, while they don't care about him at all.
SkateFiguring and shine,Patrick's video have much viewers cause some south korea site post the link too,and he's very popular there.while others are mainly viewers from china.
shine, there are still no HD videos as Beijing shows, choose some album which contain some other skaters, thanks to the uploader:

LuCN, I was refering to Youtube videos.
BTW, here is Patrick's DWBH in Beijing. You can always tell his appeal, and maybe the age of the audience and a bit of the local cultural bent in emotional display, by the reactions of the audience to his telephone gesture and when he blows kisses. The Koreans go nuts and the Russians were stone cold.Canadians tend to laugh at his grabbing his blade with a silly grin.
There are a few other YT videos of his Moondance as well but, as usual, the first one posted gets the most views even if often there are better ones uploaded later. In this case the first one is pretty good.
