Congrats to the medal winners. However, overall scores are discouragingly low. None of the skaters even met the minimum qualification for GP entry (Ladies 117.48 points)

Isn't the required score a sum of the scores from both the short and the long program, though?

117.48 just for the long would actually be a pretty impressive score.

Yes, it's total score. If the cutoff was 117+ for LP scores only, we'd only see a select few skaters compete.

So for minimum SP + FS score total of 117.XX, Marocco, Meite, Ishikawa, Simancikova achieved it here, which not coincidentally, also happen to be the top 4 free skaters. But McCorkell apparently did not. I also thought last season's SB's ranking above a certain number (75?) also qualified one for the GP. Or is it both criteria have to be met?

Oops! I did indeed misunderstood the FR scores only with the combined scores. Sorry about confusing everyone.

I've read that Z/G's 2 deductions were for music violations. Does anyone know why?

At least one other team this year has gotten a music violation for not having a discernible beat for more than 10 seconds. That could well be it.

Teams should take note. Get out that drum machine and add a beat if your music hasn't got it at all points.

The other team was skating to Hall of the Mountain King and another piece from Peer Gynt, AFAIR.

For a ( - 2 ) deduction

Music – violation of music restrictions (Free Dance), according to the Rule 610 paragraph 1.c)

The following describes the process

Referee together with the Judges Panel decides on violations of music requirements. The corresponding deductions are applied according to the opinion of the majority of the Panel which includes all the Judges and the Referee and no deduction in case of a 50:50 split vote). The Judges and Referee will press a button on their screen
to apply the above mentioned deductions.

and here's the possibles from Rule 610

c) The music for Free Dance must be suitable for Ice Dance as a sport discipline and must have the
following characteristics:
i) The music must have an audible rhythmic beat and melody, or audible rhythmic beat alone, but
not melody alone, and may be vocal. The music may be without an audible rhythmic beat for up
to 10 seconds at the beginning or end of the program and up to 10 seconds during the program.
ii) The music must have at least one change of tempo and/or expression. This change may be
gradual or immediate, but in either case it must be obvious.
iii) All music including classical music must be cut/edited, orchestrated or arranged in a way that it
creates an interesting, colorful, entertaining dance program with different dance moods or a
building effect.
iv) The music must be suitable for the couple's skating skills and technical ability.
Free Dances that do not adhere to these guidelines will be severely penalized;
