Looks like it will be between Vannut, Shelepen, Fujisawa, Nishino, and Siraj for podium. (Edit: Oops, missed Kim! If she skates well she definitely has the technical firepower) Why did Daniels get a spot? I know she did well at nationals, but her summer competitions have been AWFUL. Then again, Lauren Dinh got a spot too...although Dinh got 2nd and Daniels got the pewter medal..

I wish the ISU website would just list all the entries for each JGP competition like it has already done for the senior ladies.

They can't because the submissions aren't due from the federations yet. Some federations are deep and a second event is dependent on doing well in the first.

Siraj won't participate here for sure. She is just a placeholder and will get a spot if she does well enough in Latvia.

No, I'm pretty sure this is Siraj's second assignment. She placed top 10 at nationals and most importantly, made the JGP Final last year.

I know, but it doesn't matter if she bombs her first JGP. I hope she won't though, I like this girl, her programs are just fabulous, especially Daphne and Chloe SP. :)

It was explained somewhere last year that a skater should do well at his/her first JGP in order to ger the second. And Jason Brown said in the article:
“I would love to (medal) at my first international assignment, earn a second, and (medal) there as well,” Brown said.

Predictions?

Mens
JGP Volvo Cup gold medalist Ryuju Hino should take gold for sure. No other man in this field has a JGP-medal. I'm thinking Dong-Won Lee or Thomas Sosniak might medal.

Ladies
Polina Shelepen will medal, probably gold based on her consistency. Hae-Jin Kim could also take gold, IF she lays down her free skate. Other podium contenders are Polina Korobeynikova, Yukiko Fujisawa, Yuki Nishino, and perhaps Americans Ashley Cain and McKinzie Daniels.

Ice Dance
Alexandra Stepanova/Ivan Bukin for gold and Anastasia Galyeta/Alexei Shumski for silver. Not sure about bronze.

Daniels hasn't skated well this summer at all. I don't expect her to do well here. Cain came close in her first assignment. Shelepen should medal.

I think Shotaro Omori of the US will have a really good chance. He's been doing quite well this summer.

This seemed to be a much better outing for Nam Nguyen than his last JGP. He looked more confident and relaxed, and as a result his performance quality was higher than it was a few weeks ago. I'm glad to see that the experience is paying off.:)

Interesting that Cain had the highest PCS again.

USFS needs to evaluate its JGP ladies policy

Daniels is an also-ran at this point in the competition. Based on what observers were saying about her summer competition showings, she simply wasn't up to the task, regardless of winning a pewter medal at Nationals early in 2011. Not to pick on her specifically, but her assignment to the JGP is a perfect example of a flawed policy. The USFS needs to take into account the skater's summer competition showings and the general trend (upward, downward, or stagnant) of their overall skating, not just standings at last year's Nationals. It would have been better to take a chance on giving an Edmunds, Gold or Keiser an assignment, who have been showing well for the last few months. Cain's assignment to this event (or any 2nd event) still puzzles me, highest PCS or not. I hope that for the remaining 3 out of 6 spots (Lam, Hicks, Cesario should each get one of the remaining JGP's based on their first events), the USFS wakes up. These new faces need the opportunity to get in front of international judges. Also Kulgeyko provided she is healthy.

All other things being roughly equal in choosing between skaters, I would be inclined to give an assignment to the best lutzers who can fully rotate a triple and avoid edge calls. This year's lutz requirement is proving to be the element that separates the very top of the junior ladies scores, from everybody else.

Agree with your comments on the JGP selection policy, especially in singles. I thought the summer events allowed for some meaningful inputs. A lot obviously has changed with teenage-aged, rapidly changing skaters between November (when some may have not made it through Sectionals) to 10 months later. Also interesting that in some cases, full allotments are not being used. In Ice Dance, where has the depth gone? At this rate, the US will have a hard time EARNING 2 spots at each event next season if they don't pull off a top 3 country result.

Not sure why the USA isn't using its full allotment. Maybe: running out of eligible skaters/teams? conserving money? skaters turning down assignments? Would be interested to hear the scoop from those in the know. There may be a sensible reason(s) it makes sense to go lean and mean at this time, and we're just not seeing it.

Big congrats to Bent/McKeen on their international debut! Of all the Junior Canadian teams so far, they have impressed me the most in the amount of improvement and growth in their skating. Their SD scores are very close to Orford/Williams and Hasagawa's. They have good lines, good edges, and an engaging, age-appropriate FD. Their cha-cha at Thornhill was quite good. There are some hints of the posture issues the same as others they train with, but not nearly as noticable for some reason. Even their costumes are well done. Best of luck to them in the FD!

I couldn't agree more, NorthernDancers!! I was very impressed by Bent & McKeen's programs at Thornhill this year, as I have been every year. The first time that I saw them skate live, they won juvenile dance at Thornhill (this was back in 07). They were great then, and have continued to improve every year. What a fantastic JGP debut for them. Their FD is charming and quite enjoyable to watch, so I hope that they nail it tomorrow.

Very nice skate for Bent and Mackeen. Another promising young pair.:)

She seems to have had a fair amount of outside dance training..not terribly thrilled with her costume, but it's OK.
Hope they do well tomorrow.
