She looks up to Shae-Lynn Bourne in this field.Plus, she could teach a lot of these newer skaters (and a good amount of the older ones too!) a thing or two about performing: projecting to the audience, carrying the energy throughout a program and really committing to the choreography and character. She is amazing at doing all of those things...

Me, too! Her idol is Michelle Kwan.She brings a very different presence to ice than Michelle, but they both excel in performance quality and connection with audience. I love Akiko's skating -- it transcends the technical details and point-counting that most other programs/skaters seem to be obsessed with these days. Akiko shows that you can still have excellent artistic performances under the ISU system. You just have to be very skilled/talented, supported by great coaching/choreography, and be committed to the performance. It's not as though back in the 6.0 when the technical demands were much lower/less well defined, that competitive skaters were churning out one artistic performance after another! Great talents were always few and far in between.
