We all agree that Patrick didn't perform well in the Olympics, right? Now let's check his SP PCS:

40.7 (#4)
SS 8.3 (#2, tied Takahashi)
TR 7.85 (#3)
PE 8 (#3 tied Oda)
CH 8.25 (#4)
IN 8.3 (#4)

So in 2009 he did a much better job but his PCS was #3, but in 2010 a poor performance still earned him the #4 position. Just imagine what position he'd have been had it happened in the 2009 worlds.

I am tired of convincing people that PCS can be affected by a skater's reputation. Again, let's agree to disagree. I am done.

CoP is not an ordinal system like 6.0 such that quite often the program placements are not reflected at the final standing. E.g. Asada won Worlds 2010 with program placements of 2/2. At SA this year Kozuka was 3rd after 2/2 while Helgsson was also 3rd after 5/5. OTOH Abbott just won COC with 3/3. It's all about the total points.

With or without reputation, a skater's PCS is relatively stable with a much smaller range than his/her TES which involves high risk elements. Thus winning chances are highest for high PCS skaters who are able to earn high TES but still have the PCS to fall on if the element executions do not go well. Their placements will largely depend on the high risk TES but good ol' reliable PCS will likely "save" them from falling too far down the ranking. It's not necessary a matter of reputation as much as skating skills being more reliable than jumping multiple revolutions on ice.

CoP is not SUPPOSED to be an ordinal system like 6.0, but unfortunately some of the judges use the PCS and/or GOE to place skaters in the order they want them. The skaters they like/support get high PCS and GOE, and their closest competitors get much lower PCS and GOE. You may not be able to see that in the GP results, but take a look at the JGP results where the judges' results are completely transparent.
