Maybe this was covered when I was away traveling.....

This is a story about Bob Dulop, USFSA Events guy, visiting Omaha. What do you think about having both nationals at the same event center at the same time? Anyone from Omaha please chime in about restaurants and facilities near this mega complex of the Hilton and arena?

"Dunlop spent the past two days in Omaha, laying the groundwork for the event that will come to the city from Jan. 19 through 27, 2013. He met with officials from the Omaha Sports Commission, which helped land the championships.

He toured Century Link Center, where about 250 of the country’s elite skaters will compete for spots on the U.S. national championship team, and the adjacent Hilton Hotel, where many of them will stay.

That set-up — the hotel is connected to the arena by an enclosed skybridge — will be particularly appealing, Dunlop said.

“I would argue that it will be one of the best layouts in terms of what the starting point looks like,” Dunlop said. “There’s a lot of tweaking here and there to make the full plan of the event run but it really is one of the best layouts.

“The ability to have the hotel connected to both rinks makes weather a non-issue.”

Dunlop said the size of Omaha’s arena and convention center will allow U.S. Figure Skating to expand the championships to include its youngest competitors in the juvenile and intermediate groups. The older skaters will compete in the arena, with two additional sheets of ice in the convention center — one for practice and the other for the younger skaters’ competitions.“We’ll have a bigger contingent coming in ’13 than we’ve ever had,” he said. “It’s good for us to bring them all to one city and it will add to the impact of the event, as the younger group will come with families.”

Yes, they already "cancelled" Junior Nationals (Int/Juv) beginning in the 2013 season; this year is the last year of JNs. This passed at GC this past spring. It reduces overall costs for USFS and is supposed to be a really good thing. I remember when Intermediates went on the Sectionals and that was it and Juvies could medal at Regionals and that was it...

OK, just to clarify things....are you saying that the junior nationals for 2012-2013 season have been cancelled at Omaha after this Aug 2011 article was written, or Junior Nationals for the 2013-2014 season have been cancelled?

Junior Nationals as a separate event from "regular" Nationals no longer exists after this season.

OK, that is very interesting....so when the USFSA, in the form of their events manager Mr. Dunlop, said in August that Juvs and ints were competing at Omaha at Senior nats for the 2012-2013 year, this type of combining may indeed be a permanant thing. While doable, it looks like future bidders for nats will have to come up with more ice.....on the plus side, the economic impact to the city will increase, maybe enticing more bidders......

When you think about it, it does make economic sense, and since skaters and their families are fans too, it puts bodies in the seats for all events.

It was to reduce the overall expenditures for USFS. JNs is very expensive to hold - it takes nearly a full week right now. If you change it so they have to qualify through Sectionals like the "big kids", you don't have to bring in officials for a whole extra week, pay for the venue, etc. Also, there was some side discussion of "Junior Nationals Syndrome" where parents/coaches were pushing their skaters to stay back in Juvenile/Intermediate to win or make FR at Junior Nationals and those that didn't make it at all getting discouraged after 3 years in Juvenile or 4 years in Intermediate...It was leading to lost skaters from the sport in the estimation of USFS. At least by having them qualify and no exceptions (6 skaters from one Region because there are more skaters from that Region, 4 from that Region and so on), the thinking is the natural progression will be put back in place by the coaches/parents.

Does that mean the IMs and JUVs will do both Regionals and Sectionals to qualify for Nationals, just like SR, JR and NOV?
