OC .... Followed up by Baiul - rehab for alcoholism when reality kicked in. Lipinski.....hip replacement, never to be able to skate again as a result of overuse on developing growth plates. Yep...quite the recipe for a healthy future. Not to add they may be the least celebrated Olympic champions in the sport.
Let's remember that Baiul was an orphane. There might have been a lot more then skating that lead to alcoholism. The three others you mentioned all suffered from bad technique, and in Zhang/Meissner's cases bad basics.
Look at Kim, Kwan, Slutskaya, Witt, etc. There are so many talented juniors that have had wonderful senior careers, and these three are examples of ladies who had very solid technique and basics when they were younger.
If the technique is there and the basic skating skills are solid, then you have a good chance at improving from where you are.
