Last season Yuzuru had two fantastic SP early season and couldn't repeat it at his two most important events. That's why I hope for better skate from him this year at GPF, JN and Olympics.

You mean to change SP? I'm not sure if this will help him...

For me he doesn't look lonely, but I don't see any chemistry between him and Orser. I watched once again Yuzuru's programs from Finlandia Trophy. He looks so comfortable and confident with Wilson - they're laughing and talking with each other in K&C( I know that Yuzuru had there better skate but still...). That's why I think both of them should be with Yuzu in K&C.

I agree. Yuzu and Wilson seem to be better match to me. He looked relaxed and comfortable with Wilson. When he was in a talk show of Shizuka Arakawa, she asked him, " Who is the most interesting person you've met in Canada?". He immediately answered, "David Wilson!" He really seemed to trust Wilson. " When there is just David there, I don't have to ask for a spin specialist, I don't have to ask for a step specialist, I don't have to call for a dance specialist, " he said.- sorry, I don't remember exactly, but that kind of things.

Isn't that situation eerily similar to Yuna? Ok, it was after the Olympics, but she and Orser parted ways which didn't seem to be pretty, but she seems to still love David Wilson a lot. I think that Orser made a mistake in taking on Javier and Yuzuru. You can probably never give each 100% with two skaters of that calibre. I wish Yuzuru all the best but he looked so devastated after the SP. At least he could smile again after the LP. Maybe the french crowd will lift him higher than the Canadian ever could.

Yuzuru decided to stay by himself while waiting for his FS turn at FT, Wilson was at the boards watching the skaters..

this is an interview of Brian Orser and Javi.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bgPTKAqBQCY From the interview, you can tell Brian seems a very organized and disciplined person, and Javi has benefited a lot from Brian's work ethnic. Javi reportedly was a bit sluggish in training before.
Yuzuru used to train only 1.5hrs per day before move to Canada. Since, he does more training. I dont know if Brian's work ethnic is a best fit for Yuzuru. But I do believe he cares and loves Yuzuru very much as well as Javi. David Wilson is just delightful, however, since his job is only choreographer, not the main coach. he has less responsibility hence more relaxed. Perhaps that is one of the reason, skaters loves him so much.

Congratulations to Yuzu for being 2nd at Skate Canada! He was definitely not as good as in Finlandia Trophy, I'm wondering if he has some health issues or something burdening his mind or if this was just a bad weekend for him. It was almost painful to watch his FS, not because he wasn't technically as great as usually but because he wasn't connected with the music until the latter half of the programme (gorgeous ina bauer again). Seemed like he wasn't even interested in expressing the music, just skating through the coreography with a blank expression on his face.

About Yuzu's FS dress - I like it very much, although it could be a bit more "edgy", now it's very classical somehow, but it fits him well. About the SP - the programme is wonderful as ever, I really hope he can skate it as well as he did last season (making a new world record twice, that was definitely something). If there's anything bothering him at the moment, whether it's to do with his body or his mind, I hope he can get over it and hopefully we'll see him smiling and putting all his soul to his programmes in his next GP competition.

But that aside: (As noted in another thread by an another contributor to this site,) it looks to be very much in line with the skating tradition of Russian men skaters who have taken inspiration from the ballet. Yuzuru Hanyu has always admired and taken a lot of his inspiration from Russian skaters. This costume is in line with doing that. It is also a wonderful personal, symbolic and literal statement of thanks to the great skater Johnny Weir (who he personally asked to design it), one of the two skaters in particular (the other being Plushenko) who Yuzuru Hanyu has separated out as inspirations to his skating. But to me, when I see him, knowing who he is, wearing this, it says that this a person who never forgets his friends, never backs down from defending them, and never turns his back on what has made him great (and he is great both in spirit and skating). When I read and see the criticism, some of which is fair opinion, but some of which really has a vile manifestation of intolerance, I also see standing against that someone who graceful in soul, who doesn't back down and has a spirit that cannot be broken. I see a skater wearing a costume that few others could wear or would dare wear even if they wanted to. I also see a lot of the fortitude that carries over into his skating. It isn't just his skating that puts Yuzuru above the pack, it is Yuzuru that puts his skating above the pack.

I am not making the above statements lightly or as a fan who only sees things through rose-coloured glasses. (I don't see things through rose-coloured glasses.) I have always tried to look at his skating (both exes and competitions) critically. Over time though, I have come to realize that everything this person does I am not going to understand because he is of the type who pushes the envelope. What he does is what accords to his principles. And what kind of struck me, when in the summer I went back through youtube and I was looking at older skater videos of several of the skaters, was that the fearlessness Hanyu displays in just standing his ground and doing what he does is what the great ones do and what also makes them great in our minds, more or less but more than less, not just over time but over a long time. He has qualities that are very special.

Life is not a straight trajectory. It is really a test of character. On both competition nights in this tournament, we saw an 18 year old man stand tall and never stop trying even when the switch wouldn't turn on. We all know that he can skate brilliantly when he is on, but really you don't really know a person's character until you see them experience defeat. His character held strong last night. This is not the first time either. As well, in the 2013 Worlds, he came back with one the grittiest and gnarliest and kind of beautiful in its own way skates for the fs. He didn't win, but he sure did not wilt. Time and time again, where there have been situations where other skaters would and have gone off on the rails (no names will be given here out of deference to principles of decency), he has not. I, for one, would be very pleased if he did not change his costume.

Regarding the skating mistakes, I so agree that it is better to get them out of the way here now than later. He seems, when he is at his best, to skate for the purpose of skating. He connects to something out of this world. He goes somewhere else and brings it to us. On Saturday and Friday, in trying to connect to his skate with his spirit, he just couldn't get out of St. John, poor soul. And that held him into a prison of tension. Meeting an enemy of this kind (ie the pressure) is not the biggest battle he has fought. I have faith that, over time, he will in those situations find a way to just ignore the pressure, plug into his skate, enjoy his skate and be his best.

Tip to Hanyu (or Hanyu's costume designer), More leather less feather (get rid of all frilly bits), also suggest war paint under the eyes, or some dark Mascara. The guy need direction, he should be a rock star and be instilled with the confidence not the pressure if he is to survive this season and make to the Olympics. I know i know... i worry too much, but this is hardly the the same skater I fell in love with 2 years ago. What happened to his confidence and his mission accomplished killer instinct?

There's a world of difference between this skate and Patrick's. It is boy and man. Come on... we need that Hanyu killer attitude back and be @ss kickin' again!

I do agree with os168 and others who have commented about Yuzu's costume for FS this season. My personal opnion, a bit 'feminine', the 'skirt' on the front and back is distracting, the 'torn' skin revealing bits are irrelevant to 'Romeo & Juliet'. All in all, ridiculous. When my husband saw it, he asked, 'Is he being Romeo or Juliet?'. That says it all. I am saying this because I am a big fan of Yuzu and believe he has the arsenal to win at Sochi but not with this outfit. I have followed Figure Skating for over 20 years. The moment I saw his FS costume, I was disappointed. Even before it was made, when I heard that Johnny Weir was going to be designing 'it', I have my concerns. My concerns were justified. Your costume do determine how you feel about yourself and how you will project yourself. This is a 'competition' where your marks is dependant on the subjective judgment of 9 individuals. You can wear what you like for the 'gala'. I understand Yuzu is a fan of Johnny. However, we are heading to Sochi, he needs to have the whole package, a costume that is masculine and themed to 'Romeo & Juliet'. Russian coaches have the final say on the skater's whole package from music to costume. Why isn't Brian Orser putting his foot down on this costume? Yuna has always worn classy, elegant and 'themed' costumes. I like Patrick's SP and FS costumes this season - masculine, classy and elegant. Patrick's costumes are not distracting to him nor to the audience, he can just concerntrate on his skating. What a world of difference.

I like Yuzu's 'Notre Dame' costume from last season, but this season's FS outfit has just gone too far. There is a line to be drawn and Johnny's design has just crossed it.

We are all Yuzu's fans and want him to do well. I hope word can be passed onto his camp and to Brian's team that something needs to be done about his costume. That costume can be adjusted, the 'skirt' bit removed, some of the 'bling' removed and 'skin' piece patched up.
