So Carolina Kostner is now the new hero in women's figure skating? The one whose "strategy" other skaters want to copy? OK... If only all those super juniors can join the senior ranks any sooner.

    But probably not. :(
Alas, I'm in much the same frame of mind, Math. And like you, I love Alissa. But I don't know if she can carry the country on her back, nor can anyone else I can think of at this moment. Michelle and Sasha really spoiled us, didn't they.

That is WAY too much pressure for her...or quite frankly, for any of the others as well at this point.

Among our ladies, no one stands out. And those that are capable of standing out- they don't have the consistency nor the mentality down. It's been this way since 2008 when this generation of ladies took over.

Still, I can't help but wonder if there are any surprises in store. It's nearing time for a new generation of young skaters to emerge and no one has made their mark yet.

Out of all the American Women, my favourite skater is Ashey and I would love it if she won nationals and made the world team.I love Mirai and her spunk, BUT her attitude is starting to annoy me. She's 18 years old. She needs to act like it. Her training situation doesn't sound good. Maybe Frank isn't a good coach for her. I know a lot of people want to see Alissa and Mirai make the world team because they are capable of getting good scores internationally, but do you guys really expect them or one of them to make the worlds podium ? I'm sorry but I don't see it. Even with Miki and Yu Na out, I would be shocked if Mao, Carolina, and Akikko weren't on the worlds podium in some order. If both were to get sent to worlds can see them placing in the top 10. This year Mirai doesn't have the programs or it seems like the moviation and attitude. Alissa was injured at the Grand Prix Final ( which I hope she's recovering from) BUT her jumps are still suspect. I still get nervous watching her jump. I'm sorry, the 2007/2008 generation or in Alissa case (2002) their not getting it done.

I don't know what to think this year..It seems like a strange training situation but again, it might work for her?
I read on another board that someone had been at the same rink as her and was impressed with her speed and the height of her jumps,
she was even doing a nice 3Z/3L so I guess she cannot be that "out of shape"..
I have accepted the fact that she might always be a "late season skater" and trying to keep expectations down to avoid too much pressure.
She might not have the fighting spirit as some other skaters but I think she was "upset" not making the Worlds team last year and is determined to do so this year.

Alissa, Mirai, Ashley, and Rachael have all been to worlds at some point. They've had chances to prove us wrong and prove to us that they can contend for a medal. It hasn't happened yet Alissa 2009 Worlds 11th place 2011 Worlds 5th place , Mirai 2010 Worlds 7th place, Ashley 2008 Worlds 16th place, Rachael 2009 5th place, 2010, 9th place, and 2011 11th place.

that's why we need new talent, a new generation to make its mark. With all due respect, the current generation just isn't getting it done. Don't see that changing.

And the new talent is where?

Alas (and I keep using that word for women's skating this season), it's not as if a bunch of prodigies is pushing down the door trying to get in. At least, not American prodigies. Our baby ballerinas were Zhang and Nagasu. Then they were Gao and Zawadzki. Not to be dismissive of these ladies, because I always hold out hope, but so far, not so good.

Exactly. That's why the (foreseeable) future has never looked more bleak.

I still believe Nagasu could/can do it.

I have lost belief, though, that she WILL.

    Also:
    Wagner could/can do it
    Czisny could/can do it
The problem is, each of these three skater has a weakness and unforutnately, it's the SAME weakness - no "killer instinct" as a competitor.

I think we got spoiled with having skaters like Michelle and Tara who were fierce competitors. But our top skaters used to be top competitors but sadly these skaters we have now are sorely lacking when it comes to being fighters and skating with any kind of confidence. One mistake and you just close your eyes because it can get ugly.

Wagner's probably the closest thing to "killer instinct" you'll find when it comes to the Americans.

Unfortunately, killer instinct is not enough when the talent/consistency isn't there to complement it.

RD, I disagree - if Wagner had killer instinct (which might be improving) she wouldn't continuously blow her SP at Nationals
