best. ladies. dress. ever. (she was stunning-only cost 13,000? was it a gift from Vera or did Nancy have to pay?...and I have many more faves to come. What knocked your eyes out in a good way? What would you skate your LP in if you could? Post as many as you like.

Men, pairs and ice dance welcome.

I don't know if there's a photo, but Rachael's Firebird dress this season was probably my favorite costume ever.

You get a glimpse of it here in this backstage clip, because of course NBC won't allow footage of the actual program on YouTube.

I'm also fond of Meryl's magenta dress for Die Fledermaus. Beautiful color, especially with her hair, perfect length (not too short, not so long that you worry she'll get her skate caught in it), with the lovely frothy underskirt flaring out when she does turns.

And in another way, for their simplicity, I love the casual but beautifully color-coordinated heathery blue-gray outfits worn by Sale/Pelletier in 2002 for Love Story.

Gotta put Michelle in. I love her dress for Song of the Black Swan (2001). Love the deep color, and the cut of the skirt--belling out past her waist, longer in the back.

2010/2011 season: Virtue/Moir's SD: Beautifully flapperesque, and so in tune with what they're trying to portray you feel they exist in a Midnight in Paris world, but we're the visitors.
2009/2010 season: Cappellini/Lanotte FD: Intoxicating, dark, alluring, repellent, pitch perfect for what they were going for.
2008/2009 season: Faiella/Scali FD: rich in character and detailing.
2007/2008 season: Domnina/Shabalin: So full of presence. Love Shabalin's in particular.

I like costumes that are Costumes, especially in dance,

I'm going to make the distinction between Costume and Dress here.
A costume is supposed to be about the performance, supposed to be obvious to the top tier of seats, and should assist in telling the story of the performance.
Costumes also should not impede the performers, and the performers should look great in them.

Sometimes they can be great, but obvious:
Meryl & Charlie's FD outfits this year-it's clear that we are going to be treated to a ballroom dance. And the dress looks great on her.

Tessa's dress for the pink Floyd FD that was used at Canadians and 4CC's-perfect for that music.
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/f/f1/Tessa_Virtue_&_Scott_Moir_Lift_2009_4CC.jpg
While the black outfits they used for Worlds were attractive on them, they had nothing to do with the dance they were doing, and seemed to have a response to a Skate Canada dictum that year which requested understated costumes.

Sometimes not so much

Pechalat & Bourzat did a techno-Four Seasons FD in these outfits. They are wackily Perfect for it. In fact, creating costumes for this dance had to be a challenge. She is Summer/Winter, he is Fall/Spring.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=H9iAOhUHk40
Now the costumes could equally be on someone's Worst List, for being wacky, but they fit this dance!

Sometimes the costumes clue you in right away to the story!

Domnina & Shabalin's Lady & Hooligan 1930's OD-perfect- She is so clearly 1930's, and he is so clearly not the same class as she!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABKTHgMRbko

And Davis & White Samson & Delilah FD
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_JswrerbWOc&feature=player_detailpage&list=PLCC8816B3D9882783
I feel that the ropes version of Charlie's costume works better for the story, although he looks more dashing in the version at Worlds.

Torvill & Dean Paso Doble OSP, with Jane as the Cape

I love this dress! Of all her dresses this stands out amongst many winners! MK SOTBS Burgundy dress. Perfect for her figure and I loved the lower bun on her. She really had wonderful taste!

RyanBfan, wow, you got some great ones. I expected the jenny Kirk to be her Chicago dress. Iconic for me. I don't know if I'll find a photo, but her youtube skate, which was fabulous. I think she should have won gold that year. Tuly an American ice princess if ever there was one.

ETA -oh, ok...saw the "Roxie dress." That was so amazing and memorable!

I need to learn the multiquote feature...maybe someone could direct me where...Anyway, Doris, I like your costume choices. Where ice dance has had the most awful, lol, they also have the creativity when telling a story. I love Meryl in the gold Samson and Delilah dress. I always prefer too simple to too fussy, so I usually like what the Canadians are now wearing. Tessa is another ice goddess who can wear anything. Her famous kneeling on the back pose (does it have a name?) doesn't show off the dress. I will watch the skate, as I have never seen it.

In ice dance the two most iconic costumes have to belong to T&D. I was no ice dance fan, nor following skating more than every four years then, but the Paso Doble is unforgettable. So striking and creative. It is hard to be more elegant than the white black and gold of Paso Doble. I would have gone for the obvious red, but like this much better. It stays in ones's mind as much as Bolero (the skate and the costumes.) I know CD was the creator in this couple, did he also design their costumes?

Wasn't that a practice dress? I have heard that the airline lost Michelle's luggage and that Karen had to bring costumes from home. It is ironic that this dress was actually prettier and more memorable than the black and gold dress Michelle had worn previously for SOTBS.

Yes, jenaj, I have read that was a "practice" dress too. Wouldn't we all like such a budget. I like it oodles better than the black/gold number.

At the bottom right of each post, just to the right of "reply with quote," there is a little square dialogue balloon with quotation marks in it. If you want to quate several posts in one reply, click on that for each of the posts that you wish to quote. (A check mark appears by each one.)

Then click on "reply to thread" at the bottom left of the page. All of the posts that you wanted to respond to will appear in the dialogue box. You can then delete the irrelevant parts and insert your comments. Be sure to leave the code [*quote] (remove *) and [/quote] around each part than you want to appear in quotes.
