There is an long interview with all the Canton skaters on IN.

They are working with Maurizio Margaglio, Barbara Fusar-Poli's partner, on the technical side of the Yankee Polka. Maurizio is an ISU technical specialist, and currently heads up the Finnish federation's ice dance group.

Who ever finishes ahead of whom, we should have epic Barbara/Maurizio stares at US Nationals, 4CCs and Worlds!

Oleg Epstein, Gracie Gold's choreographer, is also working with Marina at Canton. Considering that I didn't consider Gracie's choreo her strong point, this is not the most wonderful thing going, IMO.

That's crazy, because isn't Babs helping Igor?!

Scott Brown is Gracie's choreographer. I think Epstein is working more on perfecting elements in with the Canton skaters, than initiating choreography.

I was looking at this article last night and now suddenly it's gone from the site. I wonder if someone was offended by what was written? I was actually relieved because all the skaters seemed to be adjusting so well to the split/all the new outside coaching, but now I'm not sure what's up.

Agree that the article is now difficult to access on IN. If one isn't already aware of the article's existence, the site appears as if it were never published.
But in a roundabout way, I was able to get back to the article just now. (Am not posting a link, per GS rules.)

Also ... I just noticed something on IN that makes me wonder about the sourcing and overall accuracy of its Davis/White bio.

The IN bio says, "Davis graduted Phi Beta Kappa from and was a member of the Principal's Honor Roll at Wylie E. Groves High School, from which she graduated in 2005."
AFAIK, only college and university students are eligible for Phi Beta Kappa. http://www.pbk.org/infoview/PBK_InfoView.aspx?t=&id=8

Davis herself would not have incorrectly credited herself as graduating Phi Beta Kappa. I would never believe that she would have done so on purpose, and it's hard to imagine a scenario in which she would have done so by accident.
So ... from whom does IN get its reporting???

Please excuse my ignorance! Mathman has given a plausible explanation below.

I believe that local chapters of Phi Beta Kappa give various awards and scholarships to outstanding high school students. In the Birmingham, Michigan, school district the society awards certificates to students who have maintained a grade point average of 3.75 (out of 4.00) throughout their high school career. Meryl probably received a certificate of excellence through this program.

Thanks for setting me straight, Mathman. I have amended my post above.

And hats off to Davis for her impressive academic record, incl. PBK!

IN has a new version of the Team Canton article live on the site today -- the new version is dated Aug 14.

Compared to the old version, the only difference that I noticed in a quick scan of the new one is that the old sentence naming the rumored Davis/White music selections for the upcoming season has been removed. But the rumored selections still are in their IN bio.

Huh....maybe that really was it. Everything else seems the same.
I still have no idea what to expect this season because all three teams have only said their music will showcase them stronger...

Seems a lot of clumsy work from icenetwork. When the reports are really little more than PR from the various skaters and camps, one would think they would make sure to have things straightened out before the articles post. It just ends up looking awkward for everyone involved, and unnecessarily so.

I think however it was a brilliant decision, now missing, to show the Barbara and Maurizio stare off as the companion photo. While Barbara gets a lot of notoriety for her bravado, I think Maurizio must make for the far more thoughtful student of the sport, and subsequently teacher. It is repeated over and over, that teaching is a unique skill. Having been an athlete is a tremendous source of empathy and a basis for "connecting" with an athlete. But teaching is a mindset and skill that is distinct I think, especially at such an elite level. I would take Maurizio as a teacher hands down as a superior teacher to Barbara if push (humor intended) came to glare, I mean shove. Patience and communicating well are keys. I have to think Maurizio, has that in spades.

I feel like Babs must have lots of patience to deal with Maurizio... Although it remains to be seen who is the better teacher.

Another thing missing from the IN article is Charlie's critique of the Detroit paper for reporting their FD music incorrectly when it had not been announced. IN presumably wants to maintain good relations with a paper that actually covers skating?

Charlie may get his hand slapped by USFS perhaps?

They are both 25, and by virtue of when their birthdays are, Charlie entered UMich a year behind Meryl. According to their offical website, Meryl graduated from high school in June 2005, so Charlie would have graduated the following year. I believe they took the Olympic year off? I'm not sure, but I think I heard that.

Meryl and Charlie both graduated from high school in 2005. They took the year following off, and then entered UMich the year after that at the same time.

A little bit off topic, but the Detroit Free Press is losing their long time figure skating reporter, Jo-anne Barnas. Her husband got a big job in another city, and she will be moving there. We will have to wait and see what changes this will bring in the coverage of skating and other Olympic sports in the future.

Wasn't Charlie's critique about the DFP about their initial coverage of the Zoueva/Shpilband split? It was IN that reported their music incorrectly.

As we knew in June, Barnas' husband left the Detroit Free Press to become the top editor at the Indianapolis Star, and she has been planning to leave as well.

Will she be joining him not only in Indianapolis, but also at the Star?
I hope that at the very least she will have a press pass in Sochi, whether reporting for the Star or another press operation.

In any case, here is a nice excerpt from Aug 13 of what seems to be her swan song marking the end of both the London Olympics and her long tenure at the Freep:

To the hundreds of Michigan athletes and your coaches, it has been an honor covering your competitions, attending your practices (or driving you to practice), sitting in your living rooms, meeting you for coffee, interviewing your families.

Although not always successful, I've tried my hardest to allow our readers to get know you better. I'll be leaving the Free Press soon to join my husband, who has a new job in a new place. I'll be taking a little bit of each of you with me.

So, no good-bye, just thank you.

If I recall correctly what was in Barnas' original article about the split of the coaches:
The Freep tried to contact at least Davis and White (and maybe other Team Canton skaters too?).
Davis declined to comment, and White was unreachable.
The Arctic Edge official gave Barnas a quote saying that the skaters did not want Shpilband at the rink.

I think White is justified in wanting to set the record straight that the skaters were not responsible for Shpilband's departure -- but if Barnas accurately quoted the Arctic Edge guy, then he is the one who misrepresented the skaters.
