If anyone has any ideas for progressions or exercises working towards backwards loops (outside or inside) it would be greatly appreciated. I am at a complete loss at how to teach them.
My coach started with moderately small circles (not regular patch size but not loop size either), first outers with a Shaefer push, holding the free leg in front, and gradually sinking in the knee to create a deeper circle and not bringing the free leg back until the deeper circle was created; it comes around about 1.5 times. Same thing on inners but the push is different and it feels different.
Definitely start off standing still with toes touching then push with free leg to give speed to the edge. Then I would say the single most important thing in learning loops successfully is upper body movement. If your skater can keep a strong upper body check, and good hip control, practice will get the edge running through.
