Patrick Chan preparing two new programs

After successfully defending his world title, Chan said he spent a lot of time in Asia doing shows and has just finished a two-week vacation where he “had a blast” surfing in Indonesia. He also spent time in Singapore where he loves the food and culture and has many friends. He’s now getting ready to head to Toronto to work on two new programs. He’s going to work with a new choreographer, who he won’t name yet, and has not yet chosen his music. He’s been working with Toronto choreographer Lori Nichol for five years. In mid-April, coach Christy Krall resigned citing a difference in coaching philosophies. Chan trains about 25 hours a week, noting he spends almost as much time off the ice as on. He does regular workouts including running and weight training and has been practising modern dance for about a year and a half. “It’s a whole different realm of movement than physical exercise,” he enthuses. “There’s flexibility and strength you don’t get from any other exercise.” The lithe skater, who landed two clean quads in this year’s free program at worlds, talks about adding a quad flip or quad Lutz to his repertoire, though he’s not guaranteeing they’ll appear in next season’s programs. But working on new choreography and new quads will keep things fresh and exciting, he said.

“I’ve decided to do two brand new programs which isn’t very common of me — I usually keep one of my programs, but I wanted to experiment and expand to another area of my skating ability,” said Chan, who spent the day signing autographs, visiting the IWK and hosting a dinner at Casino Nova Scotia. “It’s going to be quite interesting to try different choreographer and hopefully I’ll have a good season next year.”

He is going to have his work cut out putting two new program's together in time, given that he has yet to find a new coach and choreographer.

And I hope he does so for Sochi Olympic season, too.

I would love Love LOVE him skating to the classical piece, something similar to his EX Elegie, as his competitive program.

Good to hear he enjoyed himself a little after that exhausting season... he looks pretty upbeat in the interview again, way better than at WTT.

And mainly, two new programms:
I'm excited too see how his programms will turn out, since he's not working with Nichol anymore... I'm not too worried about him, with that much talent and skills, it should be impossible not to find a great new coach, and get good new programms. Keeping my fingers crossed everything will turn out well, changes like that need a lot of guts, hope it pays out

The news is indeed exciting! But I don't want him to choose a competitive program music similar to Elegie. I hope he could choose a war-horse music at least in Olympic year, like POTO, I don't mind if he chooses war-horse music in both seasons, pack with everything possible in there to earn points and win. There is a reason why war-horse music is popular in men's skating, you know. I love his choice of Aranjuez very much too. Don't see how Elegie could become a good competitive program. To the best, Elegie could be made like Abbott's Exogenesis and Life Is Beautiful. Being liked by many skating fans but they were not top knotch CoP programs. Should the top priority of competition be winning or should it be seeking artistic perfection and let the chips fall wherever they might be?

I am excited for Patrick! I think a lot of skaters are trying to "reinvent" a part of themselves, with two years to go before the Olympics. I think this will be a treat for us fans.

Don't see how Elegie could become a good competitive program. To the best, Elegie could be made like Abbott's Exogenesis and Life Is Beautiful. Being liked by many skating fans but they were not top knotch CoP programs. Should the top priority of competition be winning or should it be seeking artistic perfection and let the chips fall wherever they might be?

Blue, I see your point. Do not get me wrong, but I have a bit different feeling on this one.

I agree with you that the top priority of competition should be winning, especially for skaters who have not won the big titles yet. Points and placements do matter for them, of course. They are competitive skaters after all.
Patrick, however, has been so dominant over the past years. He does not necessarily go for war-horse music. As a two time and the reigning world champion, Patrick can go and explore a bit more experimental program/choice of music, I believe. I would like it very much if he can try something different at least in the pre Olympic season.

Speaking of Jeremy, I really love what Jeremy has brought to Mens figure skating these past two seasons.
To tell the truth, the best programs (SP+FP combined) for me were Jeremy's both in 2010-11 and 2011-12 seasons, in spite of a 'Dai'-hard fan myself. How I wished both Jeremy and Brian would have gotten onto the podium at this Worlds in Nice! I guess I wished for them, more than I wishe for Dai.

Right now, Patrick, Daisuke and Jeremy are in their own league; so much above everyone else among the current male skaters. With their such superior skaintg skills, strong edge-work, solid technique on jumps and spins, and Patrick's new direction (desire) to focus more on artistic side, these three do have a ability to extend the possibilities of figure skating as a competitive sport and under CoP system, and inspire younger and future skaters, while competing at the very top.

At the same time, competitive career does not last long, sadly. Dai and Jeremy will probably retire from competitive skating after Sochi season. If Patrick can win OGM in Sochi, he may be retiring, too, though he is still young...

We have one more season before the important Olympic season. My wish is these skaters will go for a a bit experimental direction, show us something diferent, and fascinate us once again with their dazzling performances in the upcoming season.

Oh, I've become an Abbott fan in 2010 Olympic season. I loved Jeremy's Viejos Aires and Sing, Sing, Sing (didn't like this swing SP at first, but love it now). Like his Life Is Beautiful very much but hate every second of Exogenesis including the costume, except the kneeling down part which was beautiful. I appreciate his broad ranged abilities which are actually, honestly, wider than Takahashi's and Chan's.

Right now, Patrick, Daisuke and Jeremy are in their own league; so much above everyone else among the current male skaters. Actually, I believe Exogenesis was indeed a good CoP program in the eyes of the judges as well as one that was well-liked by the fans. Jeremy received great PCS from the judges all season (80+ points) despite the jumps being not quite there. It was Jeremy's TES and lack of consistency that held him back from receiving higher scores. Case in point: 2012 Worlds. Jeremy's TES = 69.78, PCS = 81.56. Or WTT: TES = 64.45, PCS = 83.94.
