Here's the original RDS.ca (Le Réseau des sports) source link, dated July 10, that mentions "une fracture de stress au dos" (stress fracture in her back): http://www.rds.ca/amateurs/chroniques/343611.html
Thanks for the info. How awful, it sounds like a serious injury. Wishing Cynthia a quick recovery.
Oh I just hate news like this. Wishing Cynthia a full and quick recovery. What does this mean given the new minimal scores rule - can she compete at Nationals, and if she makes the world team, compete at worlds? Or does she have to have an international comp this season and if so, is there one for after nationals?
PS she looks incredibly beautiful in that photo posted with the announcement.
Lower back stress fracture Spondylolysis Injury Explained
Layback spin is definitely out of the question!Spondylolysis Signs & Symptoms
This condition is most common in adolescents and is quite rare beyond this age group. Spondylolysis is characterised by an ache in the lower back which is exacerbated by sporting activities and eased by rest. Typically, it is sore when the patient bends backwards, particularly if standing on one leg. If Spondylolysis is suspected, a GP may decide to refer the patient for a scan to confirm the diagnosis.
Spondylolysis Treatment
What you can do
Consult a sports injury expert
Wear a back brace to provide immobilisation & support
Exercise with a Swiss Ball to increase lower back muscular stability
Maintain fitness in the pool with a buoyancy aid
In most cases, complete rest is the treatment of choice. This would usually be for a period of 6 weeks, to allow the bone to heal. A Back Brace can be helpful to provide support and partial immobilisation. ............
As the bone is healing a progressive exercise program may commence, under the supervision of a Chartered Physiotherapist. This usually starts with exercises to increase the muscular stability in the lower back.
If Phaneuf should win Canadian Nationals, she would have to earn the minimum TES scores for Worlds in order to compete there. She could do it at 4CC, and if she didn't do it there, she'd have try to do it at a Senior B before Worlds. If she can't earn the minimum, she can't go to Worlds.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but how can Cynthia be out of the GP when so far, she was not in it?

Cynthia had no GP assignments at the time of this announcement. Skate Canada had a TBA, that could have gone to Cynthia, but the spot was still TBA. The two other host spots were already announced, and given to Amelie LaCoste and Kaetlyn Osmond.
I sprained my back a few years ago. You can't really do much; just take it easy and let it recover.
