Jenny Kirk: "Stay Within Yourself"

In sports, as in life, it can be easy to focus only on the lessons to be gleaned from a loss. As athletes, we’re always working towards the next goal, trying to break the previous record. We can live by the motto that we’re only as good as our last competition and may be seduced by self-doubt when that last competition was a disappointment. But rather than get caught up in past disappoints or what needs changing, we must allow ourselves to fully revel in our triumphs and savor our success. There’s an equally valuable lesson to be taken away from victory as there is defeat. Victory—whether it’s our own or someone else’s—teaches us that success never comes from overthinking. It doesn’t come from staying stuck in the past or worrying about criticism. Success strikes when we move out of our own way, shut out distractions and turn our focus within.
