McKayla goes 6th out of 8 finalists. I have not read spoilers so it is "live" for me...Have not read the Gymnastics thread, so I am hoping this cutie patootie nabs a gold. She needs a nickname 'The irish missile'? If gabby is flying squirrel, then McKayla needs a moniker. Apparently thee is video of the judges in the team finals with open mouths and NOONE understands why she was deducted anything. There is a place for a perfect score and her vault should have been it.

Oh, poor CanadiAN GIRL FELL FLAT. Anyone watching event finals with me? Sound off!

Am watching, but I already know the outcome hee hee. Poor Ellie Black, I really feel for her, hope she's not hurt too bad.
Did you see the comparison of Maroney and Uchimura doing the same vault??? So insane!!!

Oh and I'm sorry, how amazing is Oksana??? What a freakin' inspiration!!!

Oksana is my female inspiraton for these games! I did not know she is 37! How is it possible a 37 year old is competing with 7 babies on vault. ya know, that was a shocker for McKayla. gABYY SHOULD BE BEING MADE A FUSS OF LIKE pHELPS BECAUSE sorry caps again stuck twice...she made history not only as a sister winning AA. Only one other black girl, Dominique Dawes won a team gold in 96. Gabby could get a medal on bars and likely will medal if she is on like she has been. I think she is not special at all on the beam.

I felt bad for Mckayla as she should have had a perfect score on vault. I wish US gymnastics had asked where are the deductions? Serious Buinesss would you know where they deducted her team vaults? This should have been perfect score, and I think would have taken the sting out of her silver on ind. vault. She is far and away the best vaulter in the world. Silver is not too bad, but she truly was expected by ALL to post another huge score. I was disappointed for her, but hey, I did wish for the medals to be spread around since USA has a haul of gold. Gabby if she goes clean with a good dismount should medal again on bars, but she is not a shoe-in for gold. Whatever the 37 year old has left, I'd love to see the gold as she did not medal on vault.

SBusiness, who took bronze on vault? They didn't even mention her, I don't think. MacKayla Maroney's coach should protest any deductions she gets on the next perfect missile vault with a stuck landing. She is insanely crazy perfect and two feet higher than anyone. One thing I hate about gymnstics is their obsession with a stuck landing. My god, look what they do in the air and some little hop, which is normal as most landings have a bounce. They make everyone crazy with the "stickit!" screams. It seems so minor and unimportant.

I give Uchimura a tenth for best hair. Japanese men sure do like to use hair product, lol. I have none!

Oh, and SB, very interesting about the spin NBC is doing on money made.

As for Gabby again, she should have mega coverage like Retton. The backstory, her confidence she could win over Jordyn... I am hoping for more stories about her. Phelps has had 4 Olympics, he did it all, we know. I want to see more about the event finalists in Gym left to happen. Gabby's back story is way more interesting and inspiring and I'd love to see reaction of little black girls. she wants to go to Rio and if she stays tiny...hey the 37 year old and the comeback of Catalina Ponor..who is so beautiful, a woman in gymnastics is so rare. Aly has a powewrful FX and beam, so I am hoping for a major medal for her-FX seems better to me...she is a powerhouse. Jordyn as WC has got to bring home an individual medal from London. Let us hope for her. I think she has beam and FX? My Komova lost it by hitting the beam but she is like a gazelle. And the Chinese gal did so well on the bars so far. Uneven is going on.

Bronze on vault was Maria Paseka, did NBC really not show her? Man, would it really be that much to show the bronze medalist, too? Maria Paseka is the vault specialist on team Russia. It's her one and only event during team finals. Her expertise gave team Russia a score boost, but obviously not as much as Maroney's vault boosted team USA's score.

As for what they took off on Maroney's vault during the team finals, I can't tell ya. I don't follow gymnastics that much. And it seemed that to me, it's not just her height, but her form was absolutely perfect on that vault. I wonder if they have a deduction for the height of a vault being below some inhuman level (like 3 body lengths in the air or something), and Maroney just happens to get the least of that deduction due to her massive height. She may not have gotten a perfect score on the vault during the team final, but she did get the highest single score awarded to any female gymnast at these Olympic games so far. And barring someone pulling out something truly unbelievable on bars, it's not going to be topped. Maroney strikes me as being very much a perfectionist. Her silver on vault seemed to gall her. But I hope she walks away from these games knowing that she was, perhaps, the most special part of team USA and their gold medal win; she got the highest score of any female gymnast at the games, and far more people saw her do her trademark vault perfectly during the team finals than they would've during the vault event finals. She has set a standard that every gymnast will compare themselves to for years to come.

I agree there's too much emphasis on stuck landings. But it must be said, even when Maroney doesn't stick her landings (which she usually doesn't on the Amanar), she still gets a massive score for her perfect form in the air and her massive height. I think the judges have a very specific amount they take off on faulty landings, and there's a limit to it. If, as the NBC commentator Tim Daggett speculated, Maroney only fell on vault #2 because she was trying too hard to stick it, then the bitter irony is that Maroney should've rolled with imperfection rather than go for the impossible when a landing has gone crooked.

Ya know, I wouldn't doubt NBC is already scheming and doing specials on Gabby's life. Without Phelps competing, and with most of the gymnastic events over, they're going to have to bank on the biggest NEW star of these Olympics, which is Douglas, for those ratings they love.

P.S. I tuned in around midnight and was pleasantly surprised to see that NBC actually showed at least some of the pommel horse finals. I'm surprised because no American even competed in that. Really, it's an event Americans are terrible on. I'd think NBC would want people to forget pommel horse even exists.

I like spreading the wealth around. A bit of a shocker. the vault was the one event everyone was sure who would win gold. Oh well. I know I will get shot here but I feel kind of sorry for Jordan Wieber. To be favoured with Gabby for gold and not get to compete despite being fourth in the qualifying round. Mind you a balanced approach will let you know that this has plagued China, Russia and Romania as well so USA shouldn't be too upset. As well, last year at the world's Aly Raisman was on the short end of the stick I think she was fourth in the qualifying round too. Also, the media (American) that made fun of the Russian girls crying and in particular Komova after the all around - remember folks they are someone's little girl too just as Gabby, Aly, Jordan and all. And it wasn't like Gabby killed Komova; it was close like Evegeni and Evan close. A different interpretation and the results could have been flipped.

At the World Championship last year, in the All-around final, Weiber finished 1st and Raisman finished 4th. The three Team USA members that failed to advance to the individual all around final because of the 'two per country rule' were Douglas (5th), Vega (9th) and Maroney (12th).
