Lake Placid is a competition of dark horses; skaters I've never seen, skaters with no international experience, and skaters who have been injured and whose current condition is not wholly known. Therefore any predictions I make should be taken with a huge helping of salt. From looking at the videos I could find of these girls, Evgenia Gerasimova RUS should win--if she skates as she did at the third leg of the 2011 Cup of Russia. However, if she skates as she did at Russian Nationals, she will lose out to Satoko Miyahara who is coming off a win this month at the Asian FS Trophy 2012 Taipei. And then there are the three American girls. If Angela Wang puts it all together, she could win the bronze. Angela has not always been consistent though. And the same can be said of Courtney Hicks, who has been troubled with injuries, but who looked quite good at Glacier Falls. Kiri Baga has also had injuries, and worse, is skating pairs at the same time as competing in singles. So if I had to guess which American girl wins the bronze, I'm guessing Angela, but with my fingers firmly crossed.

I hope some of you will comment.
I'd love to know what else you want in a preview!
I'd also like to know your opinions of how you think these ladies will place!

Thank you for this preview! I think Courchevel was more exciting than this. Even though Radionova was the clear winner, the field was stronger.

If she didn't improve so much, Russia has bigger talents than Gerasimova. I don't understand why they send her alone to this competition. Maybe others aren't ready to compete.

I think one of US girls will win this competition. Kiri Baga skates so lovely, she is my personal choice for the gold medal! I don't like Courtney's skating since the first time I saw her.

Satoko is a potential winner, too. But the competition will be in USA, so they have home advantage.

If Gerasimova and Miyahara can't skate well, I even can see US girls podium sweep. But let's not forget So Youn Park. She also can skate very well and get a medal here.

I agree that So Youn Park has promise, and her win in Seniors at the Asian FS Trophy is impressive. She definitely could medal!

I agree that Courchevel had a more exciting field, too.

There are so many talented young ladies in Russia, it's a headscratcher why they only sent one of them to Lake Placid.

Gerasimova is overscored in your preview.
Her highest score (Cup of Russia III) is because judges overscored PCS for all skaters at this event.
Because overscored were all - it wasn't problem. But score is not comparable with other events.
Her jumping content at FS of Cup of Russia III was:
3Lo+2T
3Lz+2T
3Lo
3Lz
3F
3S+2T+2T
2A
So we see no 3+3 combo.

At SP of of Cup of Russia III she had 3Lz and 3F+3T< botn with negative GOE, and 2A.

12th place an Nationals and 9th place at Junior Nationals reflect her level better.
At past season she was a little higher than Titushkina.
Very, very nice girl, but not one of the leaders.

As in Courshevel, I see five skaters who will beat for medals, from Japan, Russia, USA.

Unlike Courshevel, where I did know. who will win (leader was Radionova), and other four were close on level, here all the five are of comparable level, so I really don't know who will have what place.

Good luck for them all, and let the strongest win!

If she didn't improve so much, Russia has bigger talents than Gerasimova. I don't understand why they send her alone to this competition.
We also don't understand this.
In "Team of Russia" are 10 Ladies who have not GP events and are in Junior age. At least 8 of them are of enougn for JGP level.
Also there are at least two girls not in "Team of Russia" (Arina Petrova, Nikol Gosviani) who are good enough.
So at least 10. Maybe 14.
Some of them must have two events to have chance of Final.

Maybe others aren't ready to compete.
For some of these girls it would be the only chance to take place in JGP event. With very good chance to have 10th place or higher, and 10th place (or higher) gives ISU rating.
Also because of high technical level minimum Technical Scores for WJC will be earned.

Very nice preview, dorispulaski, thank you!
I think a lot will depend on technical panel there, Miyahara looks like a favorite now, but she doesn't always get full credit for her jumps. Same with Angela Wang, who had underrotating issues in the past. As for Gerasimova, I assume she is very well prepared now because a) she already got two assignments, which probably means she did well at test skates b) Titushkina, who has the same coach, improved a lot during the summer and is in a good shape/ But of course we shouldn't write Courtney Hicks off, with decent skate she can win this event

2012 JGP Lake Placid preview (ladies): The Americans vs. the Japanese

Why author ignores Evgenia Gerasimova, whose results past season were better than Ulyana Titushkina - I don't know.

Gerasimova is a question mark for me now. She wasn't very good last season, but also not bad. And Russian federation gave her the second spot already. Since they have seen her performance in the test skates, I think she is in a good form. I hope to see good things of course. Let's wait and see.

Which is why it is so difficult to guess how these ladies compare to one another!

So it should be exciting.

Good preview Doris, very informative. I am always behind and would like to know why Courtney Hicks is no longer coached by John Nicks, if anybody has any info on this.

Probably related to working with Wagner but don't know for sure...

It sounds like it was Courtney's choice to change coaches. From an IN article from April:
Hicks made the move last week to train with Congemi at the Toyota Sports Center in El Segundo, Calif., not far from where she used to train primarily at Aliso Viejo with John Nicks. Hicks said she will continue to work with choreographer Phillip Mills and will take lessons from Nicks once a week, but Congemi will be her primary coach.

Among the most prominent skaters with whom Congemi has worked are Olympic gold medalist Evan Lysacek, Bebe Liang and Jennifer Kirk.

"I had known Ken for a while, and he seemed like a good choice for me," Hicks said. "He's known nationally and internationally, and I think change is good."

Congemi said he was surprised when he got the call that Hicks was interested in training with him and said he contacted Nicks before she had a lesson in El Segundo last week.

Congemi said Nicks gave him his blessing.

"It was hard to leave Mr. Nicks," Hicks said. "It's not as bad because I'm going to still be working with him, but I'm pretty much going to be [in El Segundo] every day."

Courtney Hicks recently has switched back to a former coach, Scott Wendland, who was coaching her up through her Novice season (2009-10) when she placed 5th at Nationals. She currently lists Mr. Nicks as a secondary coach in her Team USA bio, but Wendland is her primary coach.

I liked both Kiri and Courtney. Where are they is US rankings?
Neither competed last year at Nationals due to injuries.
Hicks and Samantha Cesario (assigned to JGP #3 in Linz, Austria) are the ones who missed Nationals due to injury. Baga placed a solid 10th at 2012 Nationals in her delayed Senior debut (as mentioned in Doris' preview).

USA's Angela Wang has been landing 3Lz+3T consistently in competition this summer and I expect/hope she will do well in Lake Placid. She has the highest summer competition total score of the LP competitors and of the U.S. club competitions I've been tracking in my blog:

167.36 Angela Wang 108.77 (FS) CO Champs, Jr.
148.21 Satoko Miyahara JPN 98.92 (FS) Asian Trophy, J1
144.23 Courtney Hicks 96.68 LA Open, Sr.
139.24 Kiri Baga 90.07 (FS) Skate Milwaukee, Sr.
136.62 Nicole Rajic SVK 85.72 (FS) Lake Placid FS, Sr. (she qualified for 2012 US Nationals in Junior but WD & elected to switch to SVK where he parents were born and she can speak the language)
110.90 Alaine Chartrand CAN 73.25 (FS), Minto, Jr.
103.50 Brittany Lau SIN Skate Dallas, Sr.
90.58 Corinna Lin TPE 60.52 (FS) Empire State Games, Sr.
