Ok, I have to say that I don't understand these judges, I read all the regulations, I understand all the technical issues, I watched ice dancign for many years, and I still can't understand how are these couple scored... Can someone please explain me how Papadakis-Cizeron won with that emotionless, lifeless and technically easy program with a great score over Yanovskaya-Mozgov?

I'll give it a try after I have watched the two programs.

The protocols should be up soon, and they should spread some light on the issue.

Although the FD scores may be questionable, remember Y&M were severely behind after the SD. Y&M would have had to have won by over 4 points to have won overall.

Here's the FD results

What I don't undertsand is not why P/C won the overall score, but why were they ranked first in the FD: Y/M's looked a lot better to me, at least artistically, they deserved the highest PCS!

Protocols are now up:

http://www.isuresults.com/results/jgpaut2012/jgpaut2012_JuniorIceDance_FD_Scores.pdf

P&C got credit for a base technical score of 34.20. They received level 3 for both step sequences, the twizzles, and the spin.

Y&M had a base score of 33.70. They received level 2 for one of the step sequences and level 3 for the other step and for the spin, but level 4 for the twizzles.

A problem with the step sequence in dance often seems to accompany a drop in PCS, which in almost all judging panels is indexed to skating skills. It should not be so, but it is.

As this thread (which is an in depth discussion of how PCS is graded) brought out, over half of the PCS scores are actually technical items, not presentation items.

http://www.goldenskate.com/forum/showthread.php?36573-Ice-Dancing-PCS-Rules-2011-2012

Looking at protocols, there were a lot of deductions taken at this event:

OUCH -Prochazkova & Ceska got 3 penalties - costume failure, illegal extra element & an extended lift.

The Parsons did not get credit for one of their lifts, and took a deduction for it as an extra element. What was supposed to be a Curved Lift got called a Straight Line Lift

Leninger & Caurel, Speden & Campbell, and Kavaliova & Bieliaiev each got a deduction for an extended lift.

Busi & Fabbri had two falls.

Katkova & Grishins had a costume failure and an extended lift.

That said, I'm off to watch the competition.

Actually, I'm OK with the numbers. But then I didn't find the Y&M program artistically superior.

P&C skate smoother, without throwing up snow from the blades. They look faster, too. Both of these things give you a higher skating skills score.

Y&M had a good twizzle, and a good first lift, but it went down hill a bit from there. Y&M are particularly not good at getting smoothly in and out of lifts, and having the lifts look like an integral part of the program. During step sequences, Y&M don't have particularly good extension of their legs, and their feet are often hanging unappealingly off their ankles when their toes should be pointed.

The audio on these youtube files is particularly bad here, so I can't comment very much on the relative musicality or timing of the two teams.

BTW, what was that piece Y&M were skating to. Do you know?

I would have had P&C ahead. But then I like Pink Floyd.

Ouch about the deductions for the Czech dancers. Did a bead fall off Karolina Prochazkova's dress or something and cause the stop? Ceska looked so confused after the whistle stopped them. Then they seemed to be having issues getting the music to start where they wanted it. Also, where was the "extra lift"? The flip part at the end?

I can see why they called Parsons/Parsons' lift as straight line instead of curved, though, as much as it sucks to lose points for it. I could see that Michael was trying to curve but his blades didn't get in at the right positions and to fix it would have meant aborting the lift.
